Welcome, parents and students!
A good, professional tutor is like a good, professional coach or personal trainer.
A serious student who wants to succeed uses a personal tutor the way a pro basketball player uses a coach, or a pro swimmer uses a personal trainer. Getting help from a professional is a source of pride.
Tutoring is my full-time profession. I have extensive experience with science and math tutoring, as well as test preparation and study skills. I tutor at all levels, including elementary and middle school, high school and college. I have four kids of my own in Fairfax County schools.
I am a down-to-earth, friendly PhD teacher and scientist by background. As you can see from my experience and ratings, I am in high demand at WyzAnt, and I go the extra mile to meet each student's individual needs.
Every one of my students receives personalized, customized assistance. I focus on your specific situation and requirements, with frequent assessments and feedback. Sessions are relaxed, efficient and productive.
Although there's no substitute for in-person sessions, I can supplement home visits with Wyzant's new one-on-one Online Tutoring, plus WebEx, Skype or Google. This generally works quite well; your first online session is refundable if you are not fully satisfied.
This has significant advantages:
(1) I tutor students who are home sick;
(2) I tutor during inclement weather;
(3) Often I can do video tutoring when my schedule is booked for travel due to high demand;
(4) Parents need not be present;
(5) Available at odd hours on short notice, or when you are traveling.
I often provide students with links to free Internet resources that they can explore on their own time.
I recently published an eBook describing how eLearning technologies will change the future of education: "The Electronic Schoolhouse: A Bright Future for Education."
I recognize that students and parents are making a significant investment, and I pack in as much value per hour as possible. I tell you how to perform tasks on your own to minimize tutoring costs.
I know how to speak in plain language and know how to listen. I myself learn from every student, and I have never stopped learning. I have seen what works and what does not. I know how to get results. I care deeply about the success of each one of my students.
Students are quite comfortable with my tutoring style, and look forward to my tutoring sessions--as I do. I know how to motivate and build confidence, with guided practice and positive feedback. I assist with immediate needs, such as exam preparation, as well as deep comprehension of the subject matter. I also address long-term issues such as study skills and work habits.
I help students in all kinds of situations:
--students in public schools, magnet schools, elite private schools, college, and homeschoolers
--highly capable students who want to get the best possible grades
--students who are failing a class and need immediate crisis management
--students who have problems with procrastination or focus
--students who want to get ahead with early preparation
--students who need to rebuild a basic foundation in math or science
--students with poor motivation, study skills or self-confidence
--students with bad teachers or disruptive classrooms
--students who want to improve their scores on SAT, ACT, or other standardized tests
Current and former clients include:
Public school students of all abilities, grades 4-12
Private and prep school students of all abilities, grades 4-12
TJ students (Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology)
College students (GMU, NVCC, American U.)
Adults who need to prepare for GRE, Praxis, ASVAB, etc.
I attended formal graduate teacher training at VCCS/EducateVA, and received official Biology and Chemistry teaching certification in the State of Virginia, 2010-2011.
I served for three years as a tutor in Biology at Harvard University, receiving an Excellence in Teaching Award from Harvard faculty.
I have formal teacher training at one of the best high schools in the U.S. -- Thomas Jefferson High School of Science and Technology, a.k.a. TJ. I tutor many TJ students in chemistry and biology (honors and AP).
I also tutor high school classes at the opposite end of the spectrum, with substantial numbers of at-risk students, from troubled backgrounds.
I won two teaching awards as a graduate student teaching assistant in Genetics lab courses at the University of California, where I received my PhD in Biological Science, specializing in Molecular Genetics.
I have taught high school AP science classes, including labs, and have worked as a technical trainer in information technology.
As a graduate student, I discovered the mechanism by which repetitive DNA sequences evolve.
I have many years of experience in research and clinical laboratories, including research at the NIH, and founding and directing a clinical human genetics laboratory for eight years.
I have also worked as Director of Communications for the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute for three years, and have experience as a popular science writer.
I believe that motivation is at least half of the battle for success in school. Both kids and adults are motivated when their teachers capture their imagination, provide frequent positive feedback, praise and a sense of accomplishment.
I often assist students who, through no fault of their own, were placed in classes with poor teachers or poor or absent textbooks. I often recommend supplementary used text books that can be purchased inexpensively online.
Above all, I make learning fun and exciting!

Mr. L really understands learning styles -- and learning differences. He is quickly able to tailor his tutoring style to match the learning style of his student. I know this, because he has tutored both of my children, and each one is very different. They both look forward to their sessions, and he is *so* enthusiastic that it makes a parent look forward to tutoring as well. I have personally witnessed a daughter who is *not* a science kid become so interested in biology because Mr. L makes learning biology so interesting. My son, who tutors with Mr. L on pre-Algebra, has been so inspired by Mr. L. Both have learned important lessons about what it takes to be a successful student. Thank you, Mr. L!
Dr. Gene is a phenomenal tutor. Extremely responsive and gives students tools outside their classrooms that help the student tackle the subject ie: a better textbook that breaks down subject matter. After every meeting, in the comments section, he was conscientious in making clear what goals were achieved in the session and what goals were still to be met. I really felt we got our money's worth when we found him. Our son was more confident and better prepared for the subject matter which was half the battle. Thank you Dr. Gene!!
Gene has done a good job working with my high school son in Biology and Chemistry. I recommend Gene for tutoring.
Gene has made all the difference to my son's being able to understand his AP chemistry. Gene seems to be able to communicate the principles of chemistry in a way that my son is able to understand. Gene understands and can communicate and teach the mathematics behind the chemistry, which is often what is required to increase my son's comprehension of the material. My son's confidence and motivation has improved greatly since he has been working with Gene. Gene also possesses knowledge and a balance perspective regarding student courseloads; what is reasonable, and what is perhaps over-the-top. He has often lent a sympathetic ear to my frustrated teenager when it was most needed. Gene's counsel is sound, and he is willing to confer with me (the parent) when there is a genuine concern which needs to be addressed. I do not believe that I could ever find a better tutor; Gene is a perfect fit for my son and our family.
Mr. Gene as we call him is a patient and kind gentleman that makes math fun and teaches important fundamentals that my elementary school kids really need. So far we are pleased with the professional services.
Thank you for making my son's life easy. He was very upset of not having a complete understanding of the AP Chemistry. Now with your tutoring. It been much easier for him to understand the concept.
My children are coming back from the lesson saying "We had a great time today!", and that's always good to hear. He's also very patient and knows how to pin-point a child's weakness, and therefore knows how to improve it! I really feel like my children will be at the top of their class in no time!
Gene is a patient, calm, knowledgeable tutor who helps my son with Algebra. We are very grateful for his nurturing nature as well as appreciate his depth of knowledge. He takes a student where is he is at without criticism and seeks to strengthen his students' capabilities.
Gene made himself available on short notice and at odd times in order to give our son the help he needed to feel comfortable heading into the last few tests and the final exam in Chemistry. After a few body blows with low grades, our son had lost confidence. Gene was able to calm his concerns and get him back on track in order to finish solidly. I was particularly impressed by the way he gave my son steps to remember when facing any word problem. It's that sort of tool that really can make the difference.
I was going to complain about the lateness of our session, but now I understand why he is so busy. My granddaughter was so happy and relieved to finally "get it" with Chemistry basics. He quickly accessed what level of aid she needed and proceeded to break it down so that she achieved that priceless EUREKA! moment. I am extremely pleased with Dr. L's work.
My son is currently struggling in algebra 1. After the first tutoring lesson, my son took a major algebra 1 test. His grade increased by 14 points from the previous test he had taken. The teacher told my son that he had the highest test grade in the whole class. My son states that Gene L. is patient and explains the algebra 1 concepts to him. We are very fortunate to have Gene L. for our tutor.
Gene is a very good tutor who works with the student at their own pace and tries to anticipate the needs of the student as she prepares for a very difficult exam.
Yesterday, all I heard from my daughter was, "I don't understand a thing" and "I'm clueless". After our second tutoring session today in Chemistry, I'm hearing, "I love this", "I'm so happy" and "I'm so excited". As a parent, it makes me very happy to see such a positive attitude over a subject that she has struggled with for the entire school year. It also makes me realize that if I had stepped up sooner and got her the help she needed, her grades might not be where they are today. I have the utmost confidence in this tutor and I would highly recommend him to anyone needing help in Chemistry. He is patient, a great listener and simply put...he knows his stuff.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics. I am founder and eight years as director of a cutting-edge clinical genetics laboratory. I have two awards as teaching assistant in Genetics laboratory at UC Irvine.
I am a certified teacher in biology and chemistry (2011). I provide targeted assistance for the specific foundations that need rebuilding, and for particular topics missed. Extensive hands-on experience with SOL preparation and remediation, including math foundations as well as science.
I have extensive experience teaching study skills, including effective use of memorization aids such as electronic flashcards for wide range of subjects. But I also address other techniques to reach higher cognitive levels and deep understanding, as well as knowledge that is retained long after the course ends. Also, I teach motivation and addressing root causes of procrastination. Levels include middle, high school and college study skills. I have experience with teaching motivational systems and time-management to students. I have extensive experience with both highly accomplished and capable students as well as those who are struggling with the basics.
