A Communications Major at Christopher Newport University

My name is Jillian H. and I'm finishing up my first year at Christopher Newport University this Spring. I'm a Communications Major here at CNU, but I'm actually in the MAT program in hopes to get my Master's of Education so to become an elementary school teacher. I'm highly involved on campus: I played the flute in CNU's marching band and even traveled to this year's New Year's parade in London with them. I'm a sister of Zeta Tau Alpha and work with our philanthropy director with helping increase Breast Cancer Awareness and Education. I am a Younglife leader here, which is a youth ministry directed at high school students. I'm currently in contact with a publisher about my first novel, which is helping me reach my dream of becoming an author. In Communications studies I'm focusing on Interpersonal Relations, like public speaking, rhetoric, debate, and generalized human communications, along with my minor in Psychology.

I've had experience being a tutor when I was in high school as I tutored English and Spanish students. I've also helped with SAT prep and have made a lesson plan and taught a class for a former teacher at my high school. I was on Yearbook staff in high school and therefore can spot a grammatical error a mile away. I was also on the Academic Team, which greatly enhanced the knowledge needed for SATs, SOLs, and AP exams. My tutoring methods vary by students as I'll need to identify the specific areas of need in each individual. I'm always patient, and as long as the student is willing to learn I'll be there to assist.

Reading

I originally entered college as an English major but decided I could expand my interests further with a Communications degree. I received a perfect score on both of my Reading SOLs in high school, along with a 690 out of 800 on the Writing portion of the SAT and a 690 out of 800 on the Reading. Writing

In high school, I had to take the Reading/Writing SOL twice because of a policy switch. I scored a 600 both times, which is a perfect score. I also received a 690 on the Reading and a 690 on the Writing portions of the SAT, out of 800. I was on Yearbook staff in high school, and I've had Public Speaking and Debate courses in college, in which written arguments and presentations are a constant part of class. I'm also in contact with a publisher for my first novel.

English

Because of a 4 out of 5 on my AP English exam in high school, I was able to skip to an upper-level course of English World Literature in college. My parents even ask for my constant help with spell checking and word definitions!

SAT Writing

On my own SAT Writing score I received a 690 out of 800, and scored the same on SAT Reading. Even though I'm a nervous test taker, I kept in mind a few rules of thumb for the English language and they have greatly paid off. Essays are my specialty and if that's the area you're looking for assistance in, look no further! I also received a perfect score on my Reading/Writing SOL's in high school, along with a 4 out of 5 on my English AP Literature exam.

Public Speaking

I'm a Communications major and therefore am very familiar with all that goes into Public Speaking. I've also taken Debate and Argumentation, which implements many of the same techniques. Along with those I've also taken classes on Rhetoric and rhetorical strategies, which are what public speaking is based off of. As a Younglife leader and MAT student I've also been in front of hundreds of people numerous times and have acquired quite a repertoire of techniques.
