My name is Erika, and I am a rising third year student at the University of Virginia. I am pursuing a biomedical engineering degree with two minor concentrations in engineering business
and applied mathematics
. I graduated from high school in June 2012 and have tutored friends, family friends and peers since middle school.
I have volunteer experience tutoring elementary school, middle school and high school age students in a variety of subjects from math
. In my senior year of high school I volunteered for a program called Vecinos Unidos, or Neighbors United, where I tutored elementary age kids whose first language
was not English
and did not primarily speak English at home. I would help them complete their homework, read for at least 20 minutes a day, and work on problem solving skills by playing fun, educational games. Throughout high school I also volunteered to tutor students through my involvement in honor societies. I was a member of the National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Science Honor Society, and Spanish Honor Society.
In general, I have a very passionate attitude towards education and learning. When tutoring students, I encourage them to analyze the problem at hand and give them clues as to how to go about solving it without telling them how to do it. I think it is important for students to feel the satisfaction of conquering a problem themselves instead of being given the answer. I also encourage practicing additional problems to reinforce the material and check that the student is truly learning.
I have always been very hardworking and excited to learn! As a tutor I hope that I can share my passion for learning and provide tips on how to be a successful student, from improving study skills
to implementing good habits early on.
