As a former English teacher for 8 years in the high school arena, I am well-versed in all areas of English including but not limited to: grammar, spelling, reading comprehension, writing (process, editing, revision, etc.), vocabulary, reading skills improvement, literature, poetry, novels, research techniques and paper writing, MLA formatting and style, AP English, VA SOLs, Accelerated Reader, Star Reader, Interactive Achievement, etc.
I am also a former basketball coach with 3 years of experience at the high school level and have played basketball and volleyball at the high school, Junior Olympic/AAU, Collegiate, Intramural, and Adult League levels.
With a plethora of interests, I have a variety of skill sets and backgrounds including photography (I've done photojournalism, black and white 35mm, digital photography, and scrapbooking), dancing (ballroom, salsa, line), writing (professional, creative, publicity, etc.), couponing/budgeting, and event planning.
I am a building blocks teacher/coach. I believe that if you know the skills, you can put them to use no matter what/which obstacle/opponent/situation you face.
I have taught for 8 years in the public schoolhouse setting. My course load each semester included an inclusion class with the students struggling with learning or behavioral disabilities. Additionally, I have overcome ADD myself and utilize strategems learned not just from classroom observations and textbook instruction but also from first hand experiences.
I have taken extensive coursework in dance. My background includes a couples ballroom course over 10 weeks at an art Centre by dance instructors, a college course in Latin American dance intensively for 3 weeks daily, salsa lessons at a dance academy, etc.
In addition to playing both junior varsity and varsity high school basketball for four years, I also coached junior varsity basketball for three years. I was recruited to play college basketball by several schools, but due to a broken foot the summer before my first year, I "red-shirted" my first season. I then played intramural and parks and rec league ball for many years after.
As a licensed teacher of English with 8 years of experience, I have been tutoring students in the subject for just as long. I have taught across the high school spectrum from 8th through AP and everywhere in between. I have a BA and MA in the subject, and I am fully knowledgeable on all things E N G!
I have a Bachelor's Degree in English, during the course of which I completed a study in Public Speaking. I also have a Master's Degree in English which entailed many courses that required public speaking at great length, such as Literary Criticism. In addition, I taught high school English courses for 8 years, and public speaking is a large part of my methodology as I do a lot of projects to have my students prove their knowledge. Finally, in the last two years, I have taught a course in Advanced Placement English Language and Composition which I created with even greater components of public speaking as it is a college preparatory course.
As an English teacher for 8 years, I have lots of experience with the SOLs. In the last 2 years I earned a 100% pass rate. I achieve these high scores by not focusing on the tests but rather by aiming higher at the knowledge I want my students to master.
I played volleyball at the high school level for four years on the varsity squad. I also played Junior Olympic volleyball on a club team and then competed in Hawaii in a tournament of the top 5% of Juniors in the nation. As part of Junior Olympic play, I refereed games, too, so I am well versed in the rules of the sport. I was recruited to play in college but broke my foot before my first season, so I ended up playing coed club volleyball instead. After college I competed in adult parks and rec coed leagues each year as well.
