Hi, my name is David and I would love to be your tutor. I currently attend The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia but I am taking community college classes for credit while working in the Northern Virginia area from now until the end of August, 2013. My two majors are Psychology and Philosophy and I hope to be a licensed clinical psychologist someday. My specialty is math tutoring of any kind - from Kindergarten math basics up to and including Calculus I + Calculus II (Calculus AB + Calculus BC). I have tutored elementary school, middle school, high school, and college students. I am especially skilled in standardized test preparation, including the SSAT, SAT, ACT, and GRE. None of these tests measure IQ (which is not necessarily static anyways) and each exam can be conquered with proper preparation. I have taken the GRE, which is hardest of the aforementioned tests, designed for graduate school, and scored high enough for Kaplan to contact me for SAT and GRE tutoring. Lately, I have been tutoring my little sister, who is a junior in high school, for the SAT. I know the best study guides for maximizing your score on the SAT and similar tests, which, surprisingly, are often not the default Kaplan study guides that many students use. When tutoring, I have faith in each of my students because I know each student has the capacity to succeed. I see the difficulty, or trickiness, in questions and I keep my students engaged with the problem at hand while not letting him or her get discouraged. After tutoring on and off for a few years, I learned not to hover and distract when a student is getting the hang of things but instead to step back and prepare the next lesson. Not knowing how to solve a problem at first eventually leads to improved memory as to how to solve that type of problem when encountered again (as long as you learn how to solve it - which is why I am here). I have noticed that the simple act of sitting with a student will encourage him or her to pay attention and get his or her work done. Choose me!

Philosophy

I assisted the teacher during class and tutored 3rd-5th grade students for a total of 50+ hours at DJ Montague Elementary School in Williamsburg, Virginia.
