I moved to Burke, VA, from Philly at the end of October, 2012 (to spend more time close to our teenage grandkids) after 42 years of civil and criminal litigation, municipal law and commercial litigation practice, and 39 years of teaching law courses at the undergraduate level to teachers, paralegals, undergrads, adult students, police personnel and court personnel, with an occasional guest appearance in law school classes.
Additionally, I have enjoyed working with younger people, from junior high school through law school, to improve their critical reading and writing skills. To me, the English language can and should be used like a surgeon's scalpel, sharp, precise and helpful in expressing exactly what you mean to say. And it can actually be fun to learn how to better communicate, both orally and in writing.
Over the years, my student evaluations have reflected my students' conclusion that I combine my real-world experiences, a keen sense of humor and a fortunate ability to communicate even complex ideas clearly and concisely.

As for tutoring law, at either the undergrad, graduate or law school level, there aren't many areas of the law in which I haven't immersed myself over the years, since the essence of being a good litigator is the ability to "acquire, assimilate and apply". That is, I long ago learned to ACQUIRE the the legal theories involved in any controversy, to ASSIMILATE that law into the facts and setting of the case, and to APPLY what has been learned and assimilated to the prep and trial of any case.

For almost all students, there is a 'light-bulb' moment, when, seemingly out of nowhere, the student says: "AHA! I GET it now!". I have been blessed over the years with the ability to accelerate and to produce those moments. I can do it for your students!

Bar Exam

Having successfully endured the PA bar exam, at a time when it was necessary to write, over 16 hours, answers to 24 lengthy & complex questions in all areas of the law, and having monitored and mentored over my practice career the bar exam preparations of a number of employees and/or friends, I think I have a good handle on what bar examiners are seeking.

Criminal Justice

Criminal Justice: have been an active criminal law litigator my entire career (1970-date). In addition, I have created and taught three criminal law undergraduate courses (Criminal Law & Procedure, Crime and the Courts, politics and the Legal Process)in three Philadelphia-area universities (Chestnut Hill College, Widener University Legal Education Institute, St. Joseph's University)between 1973 and present. Also taught traditional criminal and criminal-constitutional law courses at same locations, as well as an undergrad criminal law/procedure course at the Philadelphia Police Academy. In addition, I have guest-lectured at Univ. of Pennsylvania Law School.

English

Reading for both enjoyment and comprehension, understanding what we read, being able to regard the English language as a friend (not something to be feared) and to use it, in writing,to express ourselves clearly --- this is what I have always enjoyed and is something I have been able to teach, from the junior high level through the college level, to younger lawyers, for many years. Becoming 'sharp' with your writing skills can actually be fun.

Law

Have taught many criminal law and judicial process courses at 3 different universities in the Philadelphia area, as well as a criminal justice/4th Amendment course at the Philadelphia Police Academy. In addition, I have tried hundreds of criminal cases for the defense, from loitering to Murder One. My business law expertise has arisen most especially in the past 15 years, as I have been called on by three other Philadelphia-area business attorneys to litigate impossible-to-settle cases for them.

Public Speaking

As an active trial lawyer since 1970, with an enormous amount of jury trial experience; as the former head of Philadelphia's oldest and largest ethnic lawyers' association; as a former Governor of the Phila. Bar Association; as an often-invited speaker at lawyers' and judges' functions; as a 'career-day' speaker more than 20 times at different high schools and universities in the Phila. area; and having on many occasions been tasked to write important speeches for political and government celebrities -- I believe my grasp of both theory and practice is public speaking is excellent.

SAT Writing

The essence of being well understood is the ability to organize your thoughts and to use your command of the language as a tool to sculpt those thoughts into a readable and readily understandable format. In over four decades of practicing trial law and mentoring students, from recent law school grads down into middle school, I have always been blessed with not only the ability to do this well myself, but also to teach others how to do the same. To me, acquiring such ease, freedom and precision of expression can be not a chore, but rather fun. Let me show you how!

Writing

Language has a 'sound', even when it's only being written. And how our personal writing 'sounds' to us is a product of determining the message we want to convey, organizing our thoughts around that message, choosing just the right, PRECISE words to express the message, and fitting them to our own, personal style. Throughout my courtroom, office and teaching career, I have been blessed to find all this easy to do, and I have passed on whatever of these skills I can to people from middle school to lawyers, and even to a few friends who are judges and politicians. I believe that anyone with a decent intellect, an ability to concentrate and a willingness to practice can become a smooth, accomplished, confident writer.
