My name is Barb. I have worked around children most of my life in one capacity or another. I ran my own home day care for three years. It specialized in an academic program that got children ready for kindergarten. I also assisted the older children with their homework.

Most recently, May 2011, I have completed my Masters Degree in Elementary Education (Pre-K through 6th grade). I have been substituting in the Fairfax County Schools for the past 3 years.

I like to use various strategies to help children learn. Not all children learn in the same way. Depending on your child's learning strengths will depend on my approach to help them learn. Most children enjoy a hands-on approach and the one-on-one that a tutor can offer them. If your child learns best by writing things, then that will be the main approach. If he or she learns best through visualization or hearing, then those methods would be the chosen avenue. My goals are always to help your child to excel in whatever area that he or she needs assistance. I will always put my best foot forward and I ask the same of you and your child.

I believe that all children have what it takes inside to learn and excel, it just takes the right environment and motivation for them to demonstrate what they have to offer.

Vocabulary

There are many ways to improve in the area of vocabulary. I will be able to assist your child in learning and implementing various strategies and techniques to strengthen his/her vocabulary skills.

Grammar

One of my strong points through school, was English. I use the teacher's resources and other resources to help each child. To help each child, I determine how they learn best and then use various strategies to help children excel, strengthen, or catch up in English.

Reading

Along with the techniques that the teacher is using, I use resources and techniques that will hone in on the weaknesses or gaps that your child has in order to help him/her excel, maintain, or catch up in reading.

Spelling

I will help your child to improve in spelling through the recognition of patterns, rules, and phonetic sounds. I will give them study techniques that can help him/her focus more on spelling and vocabulary.

Elementary Math

I am willing to assist elementary-aged children to improve their math skills and grades. I use the strategies that their teachers teach as well as different strategies that can help make connections easier or strengthen weaker areas.

Elementary Science

I work with the syllabus and sources that the teacher provides as a basis. Along with the teacher's resources and strategies, I use techniques that are most helpful to your child's learning needs. Some students learn best through a lot of visual stimulation, listening strategies, tactile/kinetic techniques, auditory methods, or a combination of any of these. I try to match your child's learning capabilities with the strategies that can help them most.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have received my MAT in Elementary Education through Liberty University (Graduated 5/2011). I am certified to teach Pre-K - 6th grade and hold a teaching license in the state of Virginia. I have substituted in the Fairfax County Public Schools for the past 3 years in grades K - 6th and also worked in special education. I can submit my license, certification, and diploma, if necessary.

Study Skills

I have taught my own children various strategies to use in studying school curricula. I base the study skills on each child's strengths as well as the the formats and strategies that the teachers are working with in order not to confuse the child. This area was heavily covered throughout my schooling. I earned a 4.0 in my Bachelors Degree program and a 3.91 in my Masters of Arts in Teaching program by using various study skills.

You can buy one of our standard 5, 10 or 15% packages or customize your own package based on how much tutoring you need. The credit you purchase can be used towards any tutor at any time and does not expire. If you do not use the entire package, we will simply deduct what you did spend on tutoring from your original purchase price and give you a refund. Discount packages start as low as $190.
