Math, Physics and Engineering are my main areas and I have a solid record of success helping students. Recently, I earned a doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech and won an award from ASME for my dissertation work. I am patient, easy going and enjoy helping students succeed. My experience includes having had the privilege to teach a number of ME classes as an instructor at Tech. As a tutor I have helped numerous students. Most have improved by two grade points.

The path to best results I have found is to help the student with strategies for thinking and problem solving. An important aspect of this is to help the student to break down the subject at hand into simpler concepts, which in turn enables the student to better grasp ideas and work practice problems. With my knowledge and experience, I am able to lead the student to an understanding of the main concepts and techniques of a challenging topic, while helping the student avoid the pitfalls.

I look forward to helping you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

My dissertation work in Mechanical Engineering required extensive use of algebra at every turn. In addition I have many hours of successful tutoring experience with this subject.

Algebra 2

My dissertation work in Mechanical Engineering required extensive use of algebra at every turn. In addition I have many hours of successful tutoring experience with this subject.

C

Before my dissertation work I have worked extensively with C as a software engineer in Silicon Valley California. I enjoyed my work using this language. I feel I am knowledgeable in this language.

Calculus

The pursuit of my doctorate in Mechanical Engineering required extensive application of advance mathematics including calculus. I also have a lot of prior success tutoring students in calculus. A recent student of mine got a 5 on his AP calculus AB exam. I am proud of him!

Computer Programming

My work before returning to school and my dissertation work has focused very intensively on the use of computer programming methods on almost a daily basis. I feel I have a good grasp on systematic design methods and for what makes good software design. I would be glad to share my experience with students in this area.

Differential Equations

My PhD work in Mechanical Engineering required extensive use of differential equations. I have a lot of experience in the formulation and solution of differential equations in my dissertation work using closed form and numerical techniques. I also have recent experience tutoring this subject.

Discrete Math

I have a lot of experience in broad areas of mathematics. These include combinatorics, complexity of algorithms, probability theory, basic graph theory and set theory which are topics common to discrete math. Much of my experience is in conjunction with software engineering and design. I have worked as a software engineer for a number of years prior to my doctorate.

English

The preparation of my PhD dissertation as well as my other scientific papers have required the extensive and prolonged exercise of writing skills. Moreover, my writing has been subject to rigorous review by others. I would be glad to aid anyone who needs help with writing, regardless of whether it is technical in nature or not.

Linear Algebra

My dissertation required extensive use of matrices in the solution of problems in finite elements analysis as well as quantum mechanics. I would look forward to being able to share some of this knowledge with perspective students. I believe I have a lot to offer in this area.

MATLAB

Most of my dissertation work has centered around writing simulations using Matlab which I have enjoyed using very much over the years. I have become very knowledgeable of a number of the various facets that are available including program design, numerical algorithms and graphics. I am very impressed with this product and would be glad to help students to get up to speed in using Matlab.

Mechanical Engineering

My recent doctorate is in the area of ME. I have had the privilege of teaching several upper division college courses over a range of topics that include system dynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. I would look forward to helping students in any of these areas.

Physical Science

Physical Science was at the heart of my work to obtain a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. My doctorate required the extensive use of physical principles. I enjoy helping students to understand this subject.

Physics

Physics was at the heart of my work to obtain a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. My doctorate required the extensive use of Quantum Mechanics, specifically density operators.

I have a bachelor's degree in this subject from UC Santa Barbara. Physics is a topic that I personally find fascinating and I enjoy helping students to understand this area of science.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is of course the precursor to algebra. I have many hours of experience helping students with prealgebra and use these techniques on a regular basis in my work. I would be glad to help any student in this area.

Precalculus

My doctorate in Mechanical Engineering required extensive application of advanced mathematics including calculus which of course includes pre-calculus. I also have had much prior success tutoring students in pre-calculus.

Statistics

Statistics is one of the topics a lot of science majors encounter, myself included. In my work I often utilize statistics concepts in presenting data in scientific papers that I write.

Trigonometry

As an engineer I use trigonometry all the time and have also helped many students master these skills. Trig is a very important topic to know and is a gateway to understanding higher math. If you are serious about this subject and hire me to help you, you will gain strong competency in this area.

Writing

The preparation of my PhD dissertation as well as my other scientific papers have required the extensive and prolonged exercise of writing skills. Moreover, my writing has been subject to rigorous review by others. I would be glad to aid anyone who needs help with writing, regardless of whether it is technical in nature or not.
