My name is Carolyn, and my teaching experience is diverse. Before I got my masters degree and teaching license, I got my second undergraduate degree in Spanish in order to teach it to non-native speakers. Afterwards, I lived in Bolivia and later in Germany, privately teaching English to non-native speakers. My students in Bolivia were learning English to pass the TOEFL test, and my students in Germany were from all over the world.

After getting my masters degree in Elementary Education, with a focus on grades 4 - 9 in social studies and language arts, I moved to Denver, Colorado, and taught grades 3 - 5 in a bilingual class of Latinos, and I transitioned them to English.

I speak Spanish, German, some French, and I'm currently studying Mandarin. I love traveling and learning new things about people from different cultures.

Currently I live in Virginia, and I have my own English language tutoring business. I work with mostly South Koreans, some of whom live in my town, but the others live in Seoul, South Korea and I Skype with them. I also have taught students from Japan, various Latin American countries, China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Iran. Although my emphasis is mostly English, I can tutor students in a variety of subjects.

I also do proofreading and editing of PhD students' dissertations, as well as Visiting faculty's articles and Power Point presentations.

I look forward to working with you in the future!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a master's degree in Elementary education and have taught in Denver Public Schools for three years. I have a license in Elementary education as well.

English

I have taught English to non-native speakers for over 15 years. My students learn how to read English, to write it well, to speak it more fluently and confidently, as well as how to listen and understand native English speakers better. For my native English speaking students, I can help you understand the various ways to approach texts for reading, how to improve your essays, and how to be critical in your discussions of literature. With your writing, I can help you clarify your positions, be more descriptive, and understand the grammar better.

ESL/ESOL

I have 15 years of experience teaching English to non-native speakers, with one year abroad in Germany, as well as three and a half months in Bolivia. I've also taught Spanish speaking children for three years in grades 3-5 in a self contained classroom Denver, Colorado, transitioning them into English for mainstream classrooms. I am capable of online tutoring with students who are unable to meet with me personally, and already have several South Koreans in Seoul taking online lessons with me weekly.

Grammar

Knowing how to speak and write correctly can be the difference between getting the job you want, being accepted at the university or college you have applied to, and being more confident in your interactions with native English speakers. My focus with students, as far as English grammar goes, is to help them understand what it is about what they have written or said that would confuse a native English speaker and why it confuses the native speaker. This helps my students understand grammar in context. I use several websites that explicitly explain grammar points, give review quizzes, and allow my students to practice exercises on their own.

Phonics

I have taught reading and writing to native Spanish speakers in grades 3-5 and in the process of helping them learn English I have taught them phonics as one of the skills needed to attain proficiency. Since Spanish does not have some of the English phonemes, this is one important aspect of learning English. I have taught over 100 Spanish speaking children in my three years in the classroom, and have improved their speaking fluency, reading levels and writing proficiency during my time with them.

Praxis

I have taken the Praxis 1 and passed it the very first time with high scores. I am a licensed educator with experience in teaching reading, writing and math.

Proofreading

With my students, I give them opportunities to "catch" mistakes in other people's writing. Then we discuss the ways that could improve that piece of writing. When my student has to proofread his or her own work, I let him or her show me what he or she thinks is incorrect, and then we look at how we can revamp their work so it represents the student's ideas in the clearest manner. Whenever there are mistakes the student misses, then I use that opportunity to address that error and we practice again.

Reading

I have taught reading in the elementary grades for three years in the Denver Public Schools from 2005 until 2007, and I was hired as a part-time Title One Reading teacher here in the Virginia Montgomery County Public Schools in the spring of 2010. I also have been teaching reading in English to young South Koreans over Skype since March 2012. I work with students on phonics, reading comprehension skills, reading fluency, and vocabulary building.

Social Studies

I have a Secondary History endorsement on my Virginia teacher's license, and I passed the middle school Praxis exam for Social Studies for my licensure in Ohio. I have taught social studies to elementary school students in grades 3 - 5 in the Denver Public Schools from 2004 until 2007, and I was an apprenticeship teacher for two Middle School Social Studies teachers in Ohio when I was earning my license in 2002.

Spanish

I have a bachelor's degree in Spanish Literature, and have taught in Spanish to bilingual Hispanic students for three years in the Denver Public Schools. I spent three months in La Paz, Bolivia as well.

Study Skills

With my master's degree in Elementary Education, and my experience as a classroom teacher, I have learned and applied the theories of how children learn, and how to teach them better ways of studying and learning. I can help students take better notes, how to read a textbook better so they will remember what they've read, how to listen to a lecture and determine what is important and what is not. I also am familiar with many ways to help students remember what they've learned, by drawing pictures, by making connections from what they've learned to personal experiences they have had, to making rhymes, dancing, and various other whole-body means.

Writing

I've always enjoyed teaching writing as it gives me a chance to help students better express themselves to the public. I taught writing in the literacy block to third, fourth, and fifth graders in the Denver Public schools from 2005 until 2007, in which they learned how to write narrative, persuasive, and research papers. In the process of writing, they learned spelling, grammar, and improved their sentence structures as well as vocabulary.
