All of Avinash’s current tutoring subjects are listed at the left. You can read more about Avinash’s qualifications in specific subjects below.

ACT English

I have about 2 years of experience working as a tutor with Kaplan. In addition to teaching science and math, I helped students improve their reading comprehension and writing skills in preparation for a number of different standardized tests. The tests I taught for include SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, and to a more limited extent LSAT. Exposure to all these different test formats and experience with tutoring for them have led me to become familiar with many performance-improving strategies. I feel certain that students can benefit a great deal from these strategies.

ACT Math

I worked as a tutor with Kaplan in the past and tutored for the ACT and SAT.

ACT Science

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a PhD in Neuroscience from Brown University. I not only have extensive training in the subject, but I am also quite passionate about learning and teaching science. I have taught science in the past whether as an undergraduate teaching assistant (Evolutionary Biology), a private tutor (Physics, Chemistry and Biology), or as a tutor for a test prep organization like Kaplan, Inc. Science is my bread and butter and I take scientific literacy very seriously.

Biology

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a PhD in Neuroscience. I also have a fair bit of teaching experience. In addition to being a teaching assistant for Evolutionary Biology I also tutored high school students in Biology in preparation for the subject SAT and ACT.

GMAT

I worked as a tutor for Kaplan for nearly two years and acquired plenty of experience tutoring for the GMAT. In addition to teaching multiple students at once in a classroom setting, I also provided one-on-one tutoring to several students who went on to be accepted into various highly competitive business schools. Having taught a variety of other standardized tests besides the GMAT (such as GRE, LSAT) I have become intimately familiar with the format of most major standardized tests. Over the years I picked up several problem-solving strategies, which can be immensely helpful for improving grades on the GMAT.

GRE

In addition to scoring really well on the GRE when I took it, I have two years of experience tutoring for this test (with Kaplan) along with several other major standardized tests (GMAT, LSAT, etc). I am intimately familiar with the format of these various tests, and over the years, I have picked up several problem-solving strategies that maximize performance on these tests. Surely, anyone taking the GRE can benefit from applying these strategies.

Physiology

I have Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a PhD in Neuroscience. During my academic career,I have taken plenty of physiology courses, first at the undergraduate and then at the graduate level. In fact, I am presently a researcher at the National Institutes of Heath, and my field of specialization is neurophysiology (physiology of the nervous system). In other words, physiology is part of my daily life, and its underlying concepts are my bread and butter. I am well qualified to teach physiology.

PSAT

I worked as a tutor for Kaplan for nearly two years and helped students prepare for several different standardized tests. I mostly tutored for SAT and GRE, but in a few instances I found myself helping younger students prepare for the PSAT. Since these different tests have largely similar question formats, I feel just at ease tutoring for PSAT as for the SAT or GRE.

SAT Math

I have about 2 years of experience working as a tutor with Kaplan. During this time, my responsibilities largely involved teaching science and math. I am perfectly at ease with mathematical notation and have the ability to distill relatively abstract mathematical concepts into easily comprehensible explanations. By tutoring for several different standardized tests, such as SAT, GRE, GMAT, etc., I came to acquire many strategies that can prove helpful for solving problems quickly on these tests.

SAT Reading

I have about 2 years of experience working as a tutor with Kaplan. In addition to teaching science and math, I helped students improve their reading comprehension and writing skills in preparation for a number of different standardized tests. The tests I taught for include SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, and to a more limited extent LSAT. Exposure to all these different test formats and experience with tutoring for them have led me to become familiar with many performance-improving strategies. I feel certain that students can benefit a great deal from these strategies.

SAT Writing

In the past, I worked with Kaplan and acquired nearly 2 years of experience tutoring for the SAT, along with a host of other standardized tests. Among my many responsibilities was helping students improve their critical reading and writing skills. I am a scientist by profession and communicating scientific ideas through writing is an integral part of my work. Needless to say, I take writing seriously, and over the years, I have accrued a great deal of experience in thinking critically and writing effectively. I feel certain that by channeling my experience I can help students greatly improve their writing abilities.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
