I was the student often raising my hand in class and going to the blackboard. I needed to know the "why" of everything; "because" didn't do it for me. This carried all the way through college at Virginia Tech where I majored in Economics and minored in both Math and Business. I was a solid B student my whole life, mainly because I found it important to balance studies and fun. Three As, two Bs and one C is a 3.4 GPA (dean's list). Three As were my hard-work commitment, two Bs moderate-work effort and one C light-work. This result was my goal, my balance.
I was a fine athlete, too -- baseball and soccer. With only about 100 boys in my high school, we couldn't field a football team.
Math came easily to me -- Writing did not! Looking back, it was mostly due to my attitude toward each. Math, to me, is solving puzzles and it can be quite fun. It's pretty much black and white. There's typically just one right answer and once you learn and properly use the rules, the right answer usually follows. I refused (still do) to be defeated by Math problems and hope to instill the same attitude and skills in you!
Writing tortured me! I once had a professor say that I had absolutely no command of the English language. As far as I was concerned, the vocabulary and grammer that I knew served me well enough. Whereas I was outspoken in Math classes, I was quite silent in English. Other students made their ideas known with fewer, more "exacting" words. It took me too many words to explain myself and I often couldn't clearly express my thoughts and feelings. I am now an exceptional writer and speaker, having worked at it for over 25 years. I will work to develop a love of words with you!
I am a gregarious (look it up!), fun-loving, adventurous person who really enjoys helping others. And I am an excellent tutor and mentor! I look forward to working with you!!
