I'm school-trained in Mandarin Chinese (my college major), and I have spent a considerable amount of time living abroad in China, where I only spoke Mandarin on a daily basis. I have many Chinese friends. I am as close to a native speaker as one can find. My speech has very little difference from a native speaker. Chinese people can't tell I'm an American during phone conversations.
Perhaps for an English-speaking learner of Mandarin, I'm a better teacher/tutor than a native Chinese speaker as I fully understand the student's perspective. I know where problems can arise for native English speakers and how to overcome them. I expect I can bring a dedicated student to an advanced level of reading, listening, and speaking within one year. The student will also be able to send emails and text/chat messages using the Pinyin system. I can also teach character writing, but ultimately writing characters takes more time (even Chinese people forget how to write the characters if they haven't been writing them for a long time!).
Note: I also teach martial arts.
I'm an excellent basketball player. I have played since early childhood. Both my brother and sister attended college on basketball scholarships. I turned down numerous scholarships to attend the U.S. Naval Academy, so I didn't play in college. However, that doesn't mean I don't have the skills. From shooting to ball-handling to passing, I can teach proper form and fundamentals. I can also teach fundamentals of offense and defense (setting screens, man to man, zones, boxing out, etc.) I can also teach anyone how to train for maximum physical output on the court.
I studied Chinese in the military, majored in Chinese in college, and I've spent over 2 years living in China. I've studied at the best language school in the country at Middlebury College. I have tutored U.S. military and government personnel not only specifically in Mandarin Chinese, but also methods of acquiring any language in the shortest amount of time possible.
I'm an Army Master Physical Fitness level trainer, and a dedicated martial artist. Whether training for Special Operations level physical fitness, athletic competition, martial arts, or for general health and longevity, I'm extremely qualified. I always maintain myself at the highest level of fitness. For example, I have never run a marathon officially, but I run those distances on my own and my times are up there with the record times of some of the top runners in the world--I'm able and willing to prove it.
I've learned from the best in the world. I'm skilled in a variety of martial arts skills for self-defense that include empty-hand techniques of striking, joint locks/manipulations, and ground fighting--as well as uses of various improvised weapons (I can prove what I can do). I can also teach strategies for staying out of the dangerous situation to begin with.
I've trained with many different teachers--some of them were very safe in their training methods and others were utterly brutal. I've found that those who teach proper techniques in a safe environment/fashion are most effective, thus I am very safe in my own training methods. There are safe ways to challenge the mind and build the martial spirit that will carry students through tough situations.
