Throughout my educational life history was always my favorite subject. I am fascinated by the past and how it shaped who we are today. In college I studied history at the University of Virginia and am currently completing a Masters in history at George Mason University. I believe it is important to continue to learn and as a teacher I try to instill that in my students.

I have six years of teaching experience in a variety of subjects. These include Advanced Placement (A.P.) United States and World history, Ancient and Modern World History, United States History, Religion, and Philosophy. I taught in the state of Virginia and am knowledgable of the end of year Standards of Learning tests. For these subjects and I can help students get ahead and also teach test taking skills needed to improve scores of students who struggle on these tests. With my experience teaching A.P. classes I am able to help students prepare for the A.P. tests by teaching content and improving specific writing skills that will improve test scores.

Outside of tutoring students on content knowledge and A.P. skills I am able to teach reading, note taking, and study skills. As a classroom teacher I taught students of all levels and am able to help students with special needs improve academically. In order to be a successful history student these skills are essential.

As a tutor it is important to assess the skills of a student and to develop a specific plan to take advantage of their strengths and improve their weaknesses.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

My focus as an undergraduate and graduate student was in American history. I have six years of experience teaching American history. The classes I taught covered material prior to European settlement through the present day and were at the advanced placement and regular academic level.

SOL

As an educator in the State of Virginia, I taught all three high school social science SOL courses. The courses were Ancient World History, Modern World History, and United States History. My students had high pass rates which were achieved by mastering the content and teaching successful test taking strategies. I have strong content knowledge in these subjects and can help make the tests more accessible for students.

World History

As an undergraduate and graduate student, I took many courses on various subjects of world history. I have three years of experience teaching world history. The classes I taught covered ancient through modern history and were at the advanced placement and regular academic level.
