I have a love for learning and a drive for excellence. I studied French language and civilization at the Sorbonne, France, and worked in a French summer camp for children. This experience advanced my fluency so that when I returned to the US as an undergraduate I was permitted to study French at the graduate level. My minor was in French West African History. I graduated as a James Scholar and a member of the honorary societies of my major and minor as well as an Alpha Lambda Delta, an honorary society for undergraduates who attain the highest grades in their first year. A Master's Degree from George Washington University earned me a job in the government working both domestically and internationally; and a second Master's degree in education earned me a Master's degree certification in teaching of French Immersion. I have taught French to adults and children, enrichment classes at the Elementary level, and other topics of interest. In my free time, I engage in Citizen Science projects and stewardship of our local parks, working as a Master Naturalist.
I wish to engage my students to nurture a curiosity for subjects and inspire a yearning for excellence. When I work with students I discern the problems that are hindering them, foster good learning habits, and encourage a desire to improve in studies beyond the tutoring session. An important factor in excelling in school is good reading skills, consistent study habits, and a faith in one's abilities and strengths.
While I do have a 24 hour cancellation policy, I understand that sessions can be missed due to illness. I am able to schedule makeups.
As an undergraduate student, I studied French language and civilization, French history, Roman history, and European history. I chose a minor in French West African history to augment studies in world history. I am also a Founder of the Seminary Ridge Foundation at Gettysburg, a Friend of Fort Ward and Carlyle House in Alexandria, VA, and a member of the Williamsburg Colonial Foundation. Specific interests center around the French and Indian War, the Civil War, and World War II. I have also taught social studies to elementary and middle school students.
I have a current K-12 Teacher's certification from the State of Virginia in French Immersion with Elementary Equivalents. I have taught classes and worked as a substitute teacher. My strengths are in elementary science and social studies. I have a Master's degree in Elementary Education from George Mason University.
I love working with students of all ages. I have taught French to adults at the US Department of Agriculture Graduate School, substitute taught in Arlington and Fairfax County schools, and taught enrichment classes at the elementary level. Having traveled extensively in Canada and Europe, and having used my language skills while working in Eastern Europe, I see the value of foreign language learning and I work to make language learning relevant to life today.
When working with a child, I try to find out how the child approaches language. I also listen for pronunciation. With young children I offer a variety of activities and I work to understand how they approach language. Some are risk takers and have good attack skills. Some are more intuitive and appear cautious. Some children take time. I ask the young student to tell me a story. Then I ask them to write it down. I use materials form their classroom to build on their work and I also go over homework. I use story books and we look at sounds and how they come in groups. There is some basic foundational work -- lists to learn, and quiz cards. That is necessary to build a foundation. But games are used to inspire a sense of risk and exploration. I also include reading, silent and out loud to see what kinds of mistakes are made. My goal is to work myself out of a job and see the child gain confidence in learning how to spell.
