I think the relationship with the student is of primary importance. Creativity and patience are needed on the part of the teacher. I try to treat each student as an individual with specific needs and interests that we can build on. I like to use YouTube and other online sources to connect with students. Though I have considerable experience teaching English writing and literature at the undergraduate college level, I would welcome opportunities to teach younger students. I also have experience teaching ESL. Most importantly, I think learning about language and literature should be fun, with a goal for lifelong curiosity.
Because of my experience living and teaching abroad, I encourage students to have global perspectives on their subjects, where applicable. I also think it's important to teach students at the middle and high school levels about web literacy - in other words, how not everything online is to be treated as true. Social media are increasingly important for our students, and it's important for them to know how to use it most effectively.
