Hello! I am Sabrina and I am from London, England. Youth are my passion and I thoroughly enjoy working with students of all ages, backgrounds, and ethnicities. I have marveled at how, with each student I have worked with, not only have I taught them something that they need help with, but during the process, they have taught me something about myself. Each interaction has and always will be priceless, because with youth, it may only take just that one moment of time working with them, for a passion or desire for learning to be ignited.

Two of the philosophies that I live by are as follows: "Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change" - Jim Rohn; and "Treat a child as though he already is the person he's capable of becoming" - Haim Ginott.

In regards to teaching, I am a Certified Health Educator, and I have worked with hundreds, probably approaching thousands, of youth within the intersection of two arenas; health and education. With all of the youth that I have interacted with, I make it my personal mission for each student to take home at least one element of what I have taught them. Within Public Health, that one element might be the motivation for personal change or influence their lives so dramatically in a positive light, that all they needed was the coaching or support from another. With all of the youth that I teach, I assume a youth development approach. This is one where the youth becomes empowered to reach within to draw upon their own skill sets to empower themselves and their peers. This is an approach where a student feels empowered to speak up and have their own voice and to take the time to work independently and with others to solve challenges and overcome obstacles. In addition to youth development, I offer tremendous support to the student during their learning process and recognize that all students require different learning styles and techniques, usually adopting a combination of styles in order for the message to be fully received and absorbed. I also recognize that it is extremely important to meet students “where they are at” and to tailor all curricula or lesson plans to that particular students’ knowledge, attitude towards the topic/material, and their perception of what needs to be learned. Adaptation is critical to ensure a student thoroughly understands the material using their perception of how they view that particular topic (and can even include their world view). Without it, a student will never fully grasp the key facts of what needs to be learned. I pay attention to the energy of the student. When teaching, I always use interactive, stimulating, and creative activities that will allow the energy of the lesson to remain dynamic and positive as possible. I want to make the learning environment fun, so will usually incorporate games with key objectives that match the learning objectives for that particular student, if applicable. In regards to tutoring, I have worked with students one-on-one with homework help on a variety of subjects, study skills and organization, academic counseling, proofreading, and grammar review. I have worked with students as young as first grade and as old as college-aged individuals. I also have experience creating lesson plans, as this is an activity that I complete often for my educational workshops. My prior tutoring assistance has always been in an informal setting.

In addition to working with youth of all ages, I am excited to work with Adults too. If you need to pass your TOEFL exam and develop college-level skills, I can be here for you.

The element of teaching/tutoring that keeps me inspired to work with students is a particular moment that almost all students experience. It is that moment when a student who has struggled with grasping a concept or topic, gets that huge gratifying smile on their face, that excited look in their eyes and jumps up with glee as they finally understand what they struggled with and the “Ah ha!” moment finally hits them. That look, smile, and excited nature is what keeps me motivated to teach youth. It is what humbles me as I think back to when I received tutoring assistance as a student. It is also what will always fuel my drive as I work with youth within the education arena.
