Are you looking to improve your spoken or written English? I am a dynamic, creative, and fun ESL teacher and writer who loves to provide individualized learning experiences for her students! I currently teach adult ESL at the Virginia Tech Culture and Language Institute, have a Masters degree in Linguistics and Teaching ESL and a BA in Creative Writing, as well as 20 years of experience as a professional writer. I am a visiting poet for Arlington County Public Schools, have taught adult ESL classes at other schools, and also have developed training courses for Federal employees, so I have a lot of teaching experience as well. The study of English is fundamentally about communicating, so in my teaching, I like to move beyond textbooks to look at English-language books, newspapers, menus, music, TV shows, and other "real" materials. I will assess your skills and tailor our lessons together to teach you exactly what you will need to feel more comfortable in the English-speaking world.

In addition, as a professional writer, I can help you improve your business or academic writing, which is often the most difficult skill for ESL learners to master. English is a complex and often-puzzling language to those who weren't born speaking it, and getting an English tutor is an investment in yourself--make this investment one that pays by hiring an experienced and knowledgeable tutor.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught writing and poetry to children in K-6 settings for the last 5 years. I am also an experienced substitute teacher and Girl Scout Leader.

English

I have an undergraduate degree in Creative Writing, am a published poet, and have served as a Visiting Poet for Arlington County Schools since 2007. I also have more than 20 years of professional writing and editing experience, including professional editorial training.

ESL/ESOL

I have a Master's degree in Linguistics and Teaching ESL from George Mason University. I currently teach at Virginia Tech's Language and Culture Institute, where I work mainly with Arabic- and Turkish-speaking students. I also have held adult ESL teaching positions through the National Graduate University and the Northern Virginia Literacy Council, where I worked with Spanish-speaking students. Because I also worked as a writer and editor for 20 years, I have a special passion for helping ESL students improve their writing.

Grammar

I have a Master's in Linguistics and more than 20 years of professional experience in writing and editing.

Literature

I have an undergraduate degree in Creative Writing, am a published poet, and have served as a Visiting Poet for Arlington County Schools since 2007.

Public Speaking

I have worked as an actress in paid and community theater productions in the DC area. My performance background, matched with my 20 years as a professional writer, editor, and communicator, allow me to help students become the most confident and polished public speakers they can be!

Writing

I am a writer and editor with more than 20 years of experience. I have written and edited a huge range of documents for non-profits, associations, government agencies, and private companies. I have written newsletters, annual reports, evaluation reports, feature articles for federal websites, press releases, program manuals, conference materials, white papers, PowerPoints, training courses, Congressional testimony, memoranda, standard operating procedure documents for federal agencies, and both private and federal grant proposals. I know how to communicate about highly technical and specialized subjects in a clear, compelling, and easily understood fashion. I am also a visiting poet for Arlington County Schools and enjoy the teaching of writing tremendously.
