**2014: Currently only tutoring at my location or online**

MY BACKGROUND - I have taught history at both the community college and high school level, tutored students from grades K - graduate school in reading comprehension and writing development, as well as edited a wide array of writing, including academic, technical, legal, and PR writing. I have directed a tutoring company, training many tutors on how to successfully help students struggling with reading and writing, and I have both led and tutored in an intensive SAT preparation program.

I have been teaching, tutoring, and editing for 10 years, including 4 years as a college newspaper editor and 2 years editing for an Estate Attorney.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

STUDENTS - My students range from elementary school struggling readers to gifted middle school students working at the college level to high school students attempting their first honors course, and to law school students striving to accomplish their first legal memo. Lessons are individualized for each student based on each individual's learning goals.

My motivation for continuing to tutor comes during each lesson when a student finally grasps a difficult concept, shows marked improved in academic confidence from learning a new reading strategy, or proudly informs me of his/ her great success on a recent test for which we studied; their success is my success, and I love having the opportunity to play a role in helping a student achieve better than he or she hoped.

I have worked successfully with ESL students from China, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Greece, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. These students ranged from elementary students who had just arrived in the US to graduate students and adult learners.

The college students with whom I work attend a variety of schools in the Greater DC area and beyond, including American University, Catholic University, George Mason University, Georgetown University, Northern Virginia Community College, University of Virginia, Colorado Law, Troy University, Webster University, and Norwich University among others.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

EDITING - If you have an essay, research paper, legal memo, thesis, or dissertation that requires editing, please email me to discuss your project and timeline. I edit all assignments using Microsoft Word's Review tool, making grammatical and spelling edits where necessary, and noting structural or logical flaws throughout the work.

If you have any questions pertaining to any area of social studies, writing, or English, please do not hesitate to send me an email. I will respond promptly.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Social Studies

I have both an Honors B.A. in History as well as an M.A. in History. I have taught high school in Florida as a certified Social Studies teacher. Further, I have published peer-reviewed articles in the field of history and social studies.

Just realized the SAT is right around the corner and you have no study time logged to show for it? Below you'll find a quick (and not entirely painless), independent study plan for those with about one month to go. Remember: This plan is not necessarily the best for long term retention; this is a crash course to improve your SAT score. Time: You'll probably need about 15 hours per... read more

The first is usually from a parent who wants to see her child succeed during a transitional phase: learning to read, the first year of high school, the first honors or AP class, and in the first year of college.
