Algebra 1
Algebra is one of the most powerful and flexible problem solving tools in math. A first course in algebra brings crucial math-solving skills together, aligning them with a more coherent and holistic presentation of the analytical tools and techniques crucial for success in all subsequent mathematics classes.
Algebra 2
I have extensive experience teaching Algebra 2, which is generally a precursor to Pre-Calculus in high school. Algebra 2 covers quadratic equations, graphing, complex numbers, functions, sequences and series, and exponents and logarithms. Problem solving skills are emphasized throughout, and time is devoted to advanced topics like telescoping sums and piece-wise functions.
Geometry
Successful problem solving in geometry is not possible without first representing the problem appropriately. This is where many students who are strong in other subject areas have problems in geometry. Students who have difficulty representing math problems will have difficulty solving them. My approach is to quickly diagnose the source of a student's problem when it comes to solving problems in geometry and to resolve this issue with the student so that success is achieved!
Praxis
I have extensive experience teaching all levels of mathematics up to the collegiate level, and I have passed both the Praxis 1 and Praxis 11 (math content 0061) exams on my first try. I am completely familiar with the content of both, and can provide invaluable assistance in the pursuit of passing these exams!
SAT Math
Success on the Math section depends on knowledge of content, understanding test-taking techniques, and being familiar with the tricks the SAT places within its exams. It is a fact that a student who strives for a score of 450-550 in the Math section will have different needs than a student whose goal lies in the 650-800 range. Having taught many students who were successful at achieving both ranges, I will quickly assess the student's needs and prepare a comprehensive plan that will result in ultimate success!!
SAT Reading
The Reading section of the SAT proves to be the most difficult section of the exam for students to improve their test scores. Primarily based on reading comprehension and sentence completion, many find the passages boring and difficult to read, and get discouraged when faced with sentence completions which include words that they do not know.
Some SAT tutors advocate studying a long list of words, hoping that one or two may turn up on the exam. I believe this is a complete waste of the student's time, especially if time is of the essence. Students are much better served learning strategies on how to approach sentence completions via a process of elimination, coupled with tips on how to identify words they do not know. Also, learning strategies on how to approach reading passages, coupled with knowing how to answer the subsequent questions, have proven to result in much higher success rates.
SAT Writing
Few students realize that just over 12 common errors in English covers over 70 percent of all the writing questions in the SAT exam! Coupled with understanding how to write essays geared specifically to the SAT requirements, the writing section proves to be one of the fastest ways to improve one's score on the exam. Potentially, one tutoring session on how to write an effective essay could catapult a student's score by about 100 points.
