I have taught for over 20 years; was teaching medical students at a prestigious
medical college. Have worked with many young people to succeed and overcome their
academic struggles.I am patient, understanding, motivating and goal-directed. Your child
will experience direct results with my aid. I try to make the tutoring experience fun
and stimulating. I accomplish this by establishing rapport with your child and find
ways to help the child to relish the experience. I like to get to know what the child collects
and likes and will have some of these objects which I will give to the child once they
attain bench mark goals that we set together. The object could be a Pokémon figure

I have tutored children dating back to my college days. I have experience
tutoring children with reading, spelling and writing. Typically I utilize
the children's' books as reference points and also have other books from my
library that I include. Typically I meet with the child for at least one hour
2 times per week. I monitor and guide the child in the learning process.
I tend to be very interactive, posing questions and encouraging reflection
on the subject matter. I give the students homework assignments based on
what we have covered during our tutoring session.

If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I taught and counseled students at Penn State's Medical College for over twenty years. I also taught Psychology to medical students and psychiatric residents.

Handwriting

As a licensed psychologist, I have extensive experience working with children who have learning disabilities. Handwriting problems can sometimes be a sign of dysgraphia which is a diagnosed learning disability. In my psychology practice I worked with children who had this problem to gain the assistance they deserved from the school as this condition is not readily amenable to remediation. I have helped children with writing difficulties to improve their writing through practice and perseverance.

MCAT

I worked for over 20 years at Penn State's College of Medicine. In that position I helped many young people prepare to sit for examinations including MCAT, medical boards, and qualifying examinations.

Phonics

I have tutored children and adolescents in reading, spelling and phonics for over 15 years. I first began tutoring children in phonics when, as an undergraduate student, I was expected to do volunteer work with children to earn credits for the class. I found this experience to be rewarding and it cemented my desire to work with children in some type of helping capacity.

I am adept at teaching children the relationship between sounds and written symbols. Further, I help children to recognize that words are made up of different sounds. Helping children to make the connection between the discrete sounds that make up words is rewarding in and of itself. I strive to make the learning experience fun for the child. As being able to read well is a building block of learning, I aim to help the child to make reading fun.

Study Skills

I am highly qualified in helping students to improve their basic study skills. When I worked at Penn State's medical college I counseled and guided students to improve their study skills and abilities. I approached it in a creative way. First I would test the student to determine what type of cognitive-perceptual style they had. I also wanted to assess their organizational skills and abilities. I would analyze their test results and devise a short treatment plan designed to revise and re-structure their study skills/habits.
