Having just graduated with a degree in computer science (3.87 GPA), I am tutoring while I prepare to travel abroad and work with an ecological simulation modeler in Germany on scholarship.
I have tutored students and graduate students in Python, C++, Java, and R, on everything from algorithms to object-oriented analysis and design. Additionally, for three years I was a teaching assistant in an honors biology course. I love helping students learn these technical subjects, and I relish the opportunity to practice my teaching skills.
In addition to taking many biology courses, I have three years of experience as a teaching assistant for my school's honors biology course, "Phage Hunters." In lab, students were responsible for isolating their own bacteriophage, extracting its DNA, and using bioinformatics to characterize its genome, giving me experience helping students learn genetics and microbiology.
I'm also happy to teach ecology to students, as I have accrued experience through my work as a field ecology intern at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, and through my honors thesis, on designing an ecological simulation of an endangered plant.
Python is my favorite scripting language, and I've tutored many advanced and beginning students in its use. In tutoring Python, I enjoy using a memory visualizer so that students can actually see what's going on from the computer's perspective.
I have experience bash scripting for UNIX operating systems to interact with the Stampede supercomputer at UT Austin and my college's computing server. I have to routinely start thousands of processes remotely and manipulate output data through the shell. Additionally, as a computer science major at my college I've had to learn day-to-day UNIX commands to progress through my studies.
Fantastic! Would not have passed without him! — Mike tutored me for Intro to Computer Programming (Python) at GMU. I had already failed the class once before and was taking it over. I felt a TON of pressure and testing anxiety. Mike's patience and reassurance put me well at ease. His positive feedback made me feel much more confident about my work. We met several times. He was very flexible and very prompt with communication. I cannot praise hi ...
