I have tutored students from ages 9-17 as well as college students. The students I have tutored come from a broad range of backgrounds, including learning disabled and students that have missed a significant amount of school due to medical issues. In addition, I have taught biology for freshmen biology majors as well as non-majors. I have tutored in groups as well as one on one. I have also taught classes as large as 30 students.
I am a published scientist with lots of different interests, including teaching! I love interacting with students and feel that any student can succeed once given the right tools and skills. I like to meet with t he student at least 2x a week in a quiet location, such as the library. Also, I give discounts for group tutoring (2 students or more). I am flexible in my tutoring style (practice problems, games, study aids, etc) and try to tailor each session to meet the students needs.
I have a lot of experience tutoring elementary students in all subjects. In addition, I volunteered at Saint James Elementary School in Falls Church, VA as a teacher aid. I worked with small groups of students as well as one-on-one to ensure that students completed in-class assignments on time.
I hold a degree in Cell and Molecular Biology. Therefore, I have 3 years of Chemistry, including a full year of Organic Chemistry. I have also taken Biochemistry and General Chemistry. I frequently related topics in Organic Chemistry to Biology when teaching freshmen Biology Lab.
I have a large amount of experience helping young students become organized (making to do lists, prioritizing tasks, keeping planners and staying focused) though tutoring elementary students as well as high school and college undergraduates. Furthermore, my experience as a teaching assistant has allowed me to mentor undergraduates as they transition into higher education classes. This includes note taking skills (I was asked to be a note taker for students with learning disabilities by the Academic Affairs Office for several classes while an undergraduate), study techniques (utilizing concept maps, making PowerPoint flash cards, outlining, etc) and building vocabulary.
