Hello! My name is Virak. I received a Bachelors from Virginia Tech and Masters from Johns Hopkins University in Environmental Science and Policy. I have a solid background in the sciences and math, but have a personal interest in learning history. I was awarded recognition for the "Faces of Conservation" by the Wilderness Society in 2010 for being an environmental steward. That year I was also awarded Student Athlete of the Year by the Virginia Asian Soccer Organization.
I believe the key to teaching is patience and communication.
These two principles are important for to allow a student to really learn and build upon the information being taught. My tutoring style is to first assess a students purpose and goals and then see where the student is having trouble in performing. Next, I plan around those objectives to devise a plan to achieve those desired goals. Learning is more than simply just memorizing formulas and data. Teaching a student the understanding of the material involves knowing how things work and why they are important. Once you make that relevant connection, learning becomes much more interesting.
Sports and fitness was also an important aspect of my life to becoming a better, well rounded person in addition to higher education. Playing sports and training taught me great values in teamwork, leadership, dedication, and responsibility. I received 1st Team, All District Honors for tennis my senior year of high school. I have played soccer all my life and played in highly competitive tournaments. Also I have coached a Division 3 Youth boys soccer team for 4 seasons. I currently play in a competitive flag football league with highly skilled players. My understanding of nutrition and fitness has allowed me to help a number of friends lose weight and get in shape.
