I am Alana, an advocate for life-long learning and on the quest for acquiring knowledge outside the box. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Spelman College and a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology from Howard University. I have taught, tutored and mentored children and adults. I have taught elementary and middle school students in all subjects and concentrations. I have also provided college counseling for high school students and adults.
My approach to the process of support and success includes key areas through a variety of multi-method teaching techniques, which are tailored to each student. Furthermore, my liberal arts background has prepared me to engage individuals in processes involving critical thinking and inquired-based analysis.
My professional and academic experiences have also enhanced my ability to incorporate a variety of pedagogical and instructional approaches: constructivist approach, collaborative activities, free-associating by brainstorming, composing and organizing information, open discussions, role-playing, puzzles, and multi-media. Additionally, I am eager and prepared to integrate creative techniques including technology into existing methods as well as newly developed programs to insure that the highest quality educational intervention services are provided to all students. My tutoring skills of practicing empathy, unconditional positive regard, genuineness, cultural competence, and respect have prepared me to engage and teach each student.
In addition, I am well prepared to offer comprehensive support services to students from diverse environments with a wide range of needs, educational backgrounds and learning styles
Am I Qualified?
My cognitive/academic ability in tutoring is supported by my graduate studies (42 credit hours in Psychology coursework with cumulative GPA 3.93 - Howard University, Washington, DC), and my undergraduate studies (64 credit hours in Psychology course work - Spelman College, Atlanta, GA). My graduate level course of study has provided me with significant understanding of the field of Counseling Psychology through numerous courses.
