I am a certified teacher with years of experience in the primary classroom, as well as in tutoring and curriculum writing. My area of greatest expertise is PK-3, particularly with reading and writing skills. I am certified and experienced in teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESL/ESOL). In addition, I am available to aid homeschooling families with short- and long-term support in the areas of curriculum and lesson planning, filling in skills gaps, finding literature that supports the standards of learning, and offering individual or small group lessons in a specific topic (eg. predicting, writing narratives, Spanish, etc.)

At this time I am available Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings.

I graduated from Nazareth College of Rochester with a double major in Spanish and French, as well as teaching certification in those subjects from grades 7-12. I later earned my M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction in Multilingual/Multicultural Settings, as well as certification in grades PK-6 and ESOL.

I have taught in DC Public Schools, Arlington Public Schools, and in Puebla, Mexico. I have also worked in curriculum development for the Puerto Rico Department of Education, in addition to tutoring when my schedule has allowed it.

I am a certified French teacher who spent a semester living in Rennes, France.

Reading

I have years of experience teaching children to read. My area of expertise is in early reading (grades PK-3). I can provide support in all 5 areas of reading--vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, phonics, and phonemic awareness--to help your child not just read the words on paper, but actively think about what he or she is reading.

Spanish

I am a certified Spanish teacher who has lived in Spain, Mexico, and Guatemala. I can help with listening, speaking, reading, writing, and cultural awareness.

Writing

I love taking students through the writing process and helping them organize scattered thoughts into a coherent piece of writing. I am trained in the Lucy Calkins: Primary Units of Study for grades K-3.
Writing is such an important way to share our thoughts. It is imperative that writing students learn how to say what they mean and mean what they say.

English

I am a native English speaker who has studied other languages. Oddly enough, my study of those languages has helped me to better understand the English language, particularly the nuances of grammar, spelling (word origins), and structure.

ESL/ESOL

I am a certified ESOL teacher with experience working with students from all over the world. I speak Spanish and French, as well as a smattering of words in other langauges, so I understand how difficult learning a new language can be. We can focus on listening and speaking skills, reading and writing skills, or all 4. I can also provide support in the area of culture.

Proofreading

I am one of those people who knows the difference between farther and further, can change a sentence from passive to active voice, and enjoys researching the finer points of grammar. I have experience proofreading short speeches, website entries, and published documents. If commas and semicolons confuse you, or you just can't get your essay organized, get in touch. I will not only help you fix it, but explain the whys and hows so you can learn to do it on your own.

Spelling

I am certified in the Words Their Way program, which begins with basic consonant sounds and spelling patterns and progresses all the way through the most complex roots, suffixes, and prefixes. I can break down rules, spelling patterns, and exceptions to facilitate mastery of this subject.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified in the state of Virginia to teach Pre-K through 6th grade. I have the most experience in grades PK-2, mostly as a classroom teacher, but also as a tutor for the past 5 years. I can offer general homework support or more specific subject area support.

Phonics

Having taught primarily grades PK-2 and ESOL, phonics has been an integral component of my teacher training and experience. I am trained in the Words Their Way program, and I am able to explain why letters make the sounds they do (and why sometimes spelling just doesn't make sense!).

Study Skills

If your child is the one who is always losing papers, bringing home the wrong book, or completing large assignments at the last minute, study skills sessions are in order.
