I have been tutoring English as a second language for four years at the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia, and have also taught classes and tested ESL students at LCNV (all work as a volunteer). In March 2012 I received ESL teaching certification from Oxford Seminars, following a 100-hour TESOL/TESL/TEFL training course that included skills development, lesson planning, and a teaching practicum. While my recent teaching experience has been solely in ESL, my education background (engineering B.S. and materials science M.S.), along with my career as an engineer at the Department of Energy, qualifies me in mathematics and science. Finally, my hobby, throughout my life, has been reading and learning about the world--its history, its geography, and its current affairs.
I always have a wonderful time tutoring. I find it so much more effective to teach students individually than as a group, and it gives me great pleasure to see a student progress. I guarantee that a student who wants to learn will learn with me, and any subject matter that he or she has been having trouble with will be conquered.
