I know - firsthand - the transforming power that a truly inspiring, fun-loving, creative teacher or tutor can have on a wandering mind.

Early on, I had a behavioral problem. I was bored.

With the specialized help I received from caring teachers and tutors, I went on to become the first in my coal mining family to go to college. I ended up at Harvard, Early Admission, NROTC.

One of the ways that my teachers, parents, and tutors channeled my boredom led to my greatest love: tutoring and teaching others. Starting in kindergarten, you could find me tutoring my peers (and older students) in subjects I had already mastered. On the school bus, on the playground, on the walk home from school ... I learned to make others' struggles my singular challenge: how to make the subject matter come alive, in a personally relevant way for each student?

All the way through secondary school, college, and into my career (business development, marketing, communications, and grant / proposal writing), I have continued to teach, tutor, mentor, and instruct others. The reward of seeing someone grasp a new concept, or re-think their opinion of the entire learning process, or overcome a learning impediment ... never gets old.

If you are a parent of a child with special needs - either struggling to succeed in a subject, or bored from lack of challenge in the classroom - I promise: you'll be thrilled with the result of my sessions.

If you are a student yourself, and you need help to get through a subject, let me be your guide. Your entire outlook will change by the time we're done.

Thank you for your consideration. I know that my proven, patient, and practical approach will change the way you learn, and will truly transform the way you feel about the challenges you're facing right now.

I look forward to working with you to achieve a whole new level of success!

Sincerely,

- David

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have significant experience working with students with ADD / ADHD, including helping newly-diagnosed students - and their parents and siblings - adjust, incorporate the diagnosis into daily life, and thrive academically and personally. This experience includes helping families navigate the IEP process, time management skills that are adapted for the ADD / ADHD student, as well as helping through medication adjustment periods.

Business

I have provided winning Business Development coaching to owners and principals of companies of all sizes. My business plans, responses to Requests for Proposal, and marketing materials win awards and win contracts. I also excel at helping owners and executives overcome their fears of public speaking.

Career Development

I take a comprehensive look at education, background, experience, and skill sets, and help job candidates develop a strategic - and practical - plan for attaining their career goals. For more than 20 years, I have helped others market their skills appropriately, develop new skills, and take the steps to land the job of their dreams.

College Counseling

I am the first in my coal mining family to attend college, and was admitted to Harvard, Early Admission, Navy ROTC. In addition to the ROTC Scholarship, I won $25,000 in other merit-based scholarships (e.g., National Merit, Presidential, etc.), all of which required complex applications and written, judged essays.

I have extensive experience in providing comprehensive college counseling to students and parents: financial aid, scholarships, college selection process, essays, and high-stakes test prep (e.g., ACT and SAT).

Families who utilize my services enjoy reduced stress and higher success at every step of the process.

Dyslexia

I have worked with dyslexic students since I was a student aide for the learning disabilities lab in grade school. First as a reading peer, then later as a junior high and high school tutor, I worked with dyslexic students. I bring literally decades of experience, and one of my current students has benefited greatly from my 2+ years' worth of ongoing help. Now in his Senior Year, he is confidently looking for colleges.

Elementary (K-6th)

The foundation a child receives in the critical K-6 years provides a springboard to a lifetime love of learning. Understanding the core concepts in the major areas - reading, math, science, and the arts - equips a child to confidently move forward in life, while retaining their initial sense of wonder.

I love working with this age group, making learning exciting, engaging, and enjoyable. For students with special needs or unorthodox learning styles, I am able to custom-tailor my approach to make the material come alive for them. Parents are thrilled to see their child beginning to take a greater interest in school, and beginning to thrive. Students appreciate that I "get" how school can be a scary place socially, especially when they are struggling with a concept that their peers seem to grasp readily.

ESL/ESOL

I love languages, and have varying degrees of proficiency in Spanish, Russian, German, and Latin. My own love of languages translates into a desire to help others learn the intricacies of English - its idioms, its cadence, and its beauty. I understand the anxiety that learning a foreign language can cause, as well as the special barriers that English presents for non-native speakers. I have a proven track record of preparing others for TOEFL and similar tests, with a special emphasis on diplomatic families and foreign-posted business executives.

MCAT

I have extensive experience helping prospective medical school students prepare successfully for the MCAT, including for admission to such institutions as Harvard Medical School. I am well-versed in all four of the subject areas:

* Physical Sciences: Besides being selected for The American Academy of Achievement (where luminaries such as Nobel Prize winners in Physics and Chemistry gather), I have proven test-taking tactics for helping med school students apply what they've learned to box in the correct answer for the "hard science" questions.

* Verbal Reasoning: I especially shine at helping "math and science oriented" students improve their scores in the verbal reasoning section of the MCAT. Often, it is the case that students bound for med school have a strong handle on the concrete knowledge underpinning their field (e.g., Organic Chemistry); but these selfsame students often struggle with the vital communication skills necessary to achieve the highest levels of success in medical school. These students routinely praise my subject-matter-based exercises to help them grasp verbal reasoning nuances directly related to their field.

* Biological Sciences: Besides studying directly under Professor E.O. Wilson - the foremost authority on Evolutionary Biology - I have extensive experience helping medical school students identify the most commonly tested points of knowledge related to Organic Chemistry and the other biological science topics covered on the MCAT.

I am confident that any prospective medical school student seeking one-on-one test prep for the MCAT will greatly value the ground-up approach I take to helping them prepare for this very high stakes test.

Public Speaking

I have won multiple debate contests during my lifetime, including while at Harvard. I was on the Executive Board of both Harvard Model Congress and Harvard Model U.N.

Since then, I have coached multiple small business owners and graduate students on giving oral presentations (e.g., for successful thesis defense + contract / bid oral presentations to Government agencies.)

Speech

I have won multiple debate contests during my lifetime, including while at Harvard. I was on the Executive Board of both Harvard Model Congress and Harvard Model U.N.

Since then, I have coached multiple small business owners and graduate students on giving oral presentations (e.g., for successful thesis defense + contract / bid oral presentations to Government agencies.)

Study Skills

From time management to modern tech distraction management to organizational skills, I excel at helping students of all abilities and habits to custom-tailor practical approaches to their workload. Scores improve, and - just as importantly - free time multiplies, leaving more time to do the things each student actually enjoys.
