My name is Matt, and I'm a well-rounded tutor. I can teach you or your child beginner and intermediate guitar lessons OR tutor you or your child in English as a Second Language (ESL). How can I do both? Well, let me tell you!
As a graduate of Eastern University, I received my B.A. in Music Education. While in this program, I learned teaching methods, studied all band and orchestral instruments, and studied jazz guitar with one of Jill Scott's touring guitarists. I have sixteen years of guitar playing experience. I can teach rock, jazz, basic finger picking techniques, I can read music, and I can work with guitar tablature. I've had plenty of opportunities to perform live as a paid musician in a band, and as a guitarist in my father's church. I've also co-directed a mini musical and taught music to kids ages K - 8 in a summer recreation program.
Here's where the ESL comes in. After I graduated university, my wife and I decided to go abroad and teach English. I took an intensive CELTA (Certificate for English Language Training to Adults)program and received my CELTA certificate from Cambridge University. After taking the CELTA course in Krakow, Poland, I flew to Jecheon, South Korea and taught ESL to children at Wonderland English Academy. After my year in Korea, I relocated back to the U.S. and moved to northern Virginia. I found work as an adult ESL teacher at MedTech Institute in Falls Church. After spending fourteen months at MedTech, I taught for one semester at Washington Baptist University in Annandale.
I am currently applying for my D.C., Virginia, and Maryland teaching licenses, as I would like to practice Music Education in the fall of 2012. If background checks are a concern for you, I currently have my FBI background check for my D.C. cert. in the mail. That information should be available shortly. You can also request to run a background check before we start tutoring. Thanks for your consideration!
