I'm a former special education teacher and hold certifications in two multi-sensory reading programs: Orton Gillingham and Wilson Reading. I work individually with students to assess their current skill level and create specialized lesson plans based on the needs of the student. Lessons focus primarily on encoding (spelling), decoding (reading), phonemic awareness, fluency, and comprehension.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I am a certrified Orton-Gillingham Dyslexia Specialist. I've completed training at Fairleigh Dickinson's Center for Dyslexia Studies which consists of programs tailored for regular classroom teachers and teachers of special education who wish to develop expertise in Orton-Gillingham. I was provided a basic framework within which to make decisions about adapting instructional sequences to the specific needs of individual students.

I'd be more than happy to provide copies of my credentials.

Elementary (K-6th)

I received my Elementary Education Certification in 2003 after completing a certificate program at Duke University and student teaching 1st grade at a local elementary school. I was then employed as a science and reading teacher at a private school in New Jersey where I taught 3rd through 6th grade.

Phonics

Certified in Orton-Gillingham (OG) a multi-sensory, kinesthetic, phonics reading program. OG uses systematic phonics, stressing the alphabetic principle in the initial stages of reading development. It takes advantage of the sound/symbol relationships inherent in the alphabetic system of writing.

I am also a Wilson Reading Level 1 Instructor. Wilson Reading like OG is a highly-structured remedial program that directly teaches the structure of the language to students and adults who have been unable to learn with other teaching strategies, or who may require multisensory language instruction.

Special Needs

Worked as a science and reading teacher at a private school that served students with language-based as well as non-verbal learning disabilities. I adapted lessons to meet the individual needs of each student in my class and in accordance with their IEPs.

My course work on how to appropriately teach special needs students includes "History of Multisensory Instructional Methods for Students with Learning Disabilities/Dyslexia", "Language Acquisition and Language Disorders", "Diagnosis of Learning Disabilities", and "Neurophysiological Basis of Learning Problems".
