Hello! My name is Trish, and I am an experienced teacher and tutor of both Spanish and English as a Second Language (ESL). English is my native language, but I am fluent in Spanish after learning it over six years ago when I served an LDS mission to Houston, Texas. I have since used it every day, and I am so grateful for the many exciting opportunities knowing a second language has brought into my life! That is why I am passionate about teaching languages.
I have three years' experience teaching and tutoring English as a Second Language with the Provo School District. I also have about six months' experience teaching and tutoring Spanish through a prestigious academy in the Salt Lake City region. I have also worked for a year as a Spanish-English interpreter for USDB. Though I have much teaching and interpreting experience, I also have many close Spanish-speaking friends. This gives me the advantage of continually learning more, and I have much "real-life" Spanish language conversational knowledge. I feel very comfortable and confident in my language skills and abilities, and I am an experienced teacher. I am a very thorough learner and teacher, and I bring this to the learning experience every time I teach.
Since I have learned a second language myself, I know firsthand what the process of language-learning is like. It can be new, uncomfortable, and scary...but it can also be extremely exciting, fun, and rewarding! I am an EXTREMELY patient and positive teacher. Though I want to push you toward making consistent progress, I want to be certain that you feel comfortable with me. If you feel uncomfortable, then you will dread your lessons and will not learn as much. But when you feel genuinely at ease, learning will happen naturally and happily. I want you to feel good about your ability to learn a new language because I know that YOU CAN. For example, during my LDS mission I had the opportunity to train three new missionaries. It was my responsibility to teach them many things, including the mission language of Spanish. One of my new trainees had a learning disability that made it very challenging for her to learn a second language. But we worked well together, and she flourished in her language abilities with time because of both my patient efforts to teach and her diligent efforts to learn. ANYONE can learn a second language where a real desire is present! :) It is a priority of mine to make sure that I am aware of each of my student's needs and goals so that together we can fulfill them.
Lastly, my students have always loved my energy and passion for what I teach. It is obvious that I love what I do, and I've been told that it's contagious! :) It's important to enjoy the learning process, to have fun, and to feel genuinely enthusiastic about the knowledge being obtained. I love to share my insights into not only the languages but also the cultures that use those languages. The reason we learn languages is to have access to other cultures, people, and opportunities. Communication opens many wonderful doors!
You'll be sure to enjoy your time spent learning with me, and I am deeply committed to and concerned about your learning experience. I am dedicated to giving ALL I can to your success and your enjoyment! Contact me, and please let me know what I can do for you! I look forward to hearing from you! Thanks!
