I have taught professionally for eight years, but in addition I have taught and tutored in family and church settings for three decades. I adapt my teaching methods to the individual's needs, so it is important for me to get to know you. I begin with the end in mind. I emphasize personal responsibility, reasoning skills and willingness to learn, for without your consent, I cannot teach you, since your education is first of all your responsibility. I have an autistic daughter and therefore I have some understanding and knowledge about learning challenges, though I have no degree in that area. I'm excited about teaching and about learning and hope to inspire you to be as well. If you were to come to my house for tutoring, it would cost 25 dollars/hour, but if I travel to your house, the fee would be $35/hour.

American History

I have taught and read about U.S. history to various age levels. I am an avid reader of history and a staunch believer in transmitting the American heritage of liberty to the rising generation. History is a living, relevant call to citizenship!

Vocabulary

I taught English for three years to sixth graders and an additional year for 1st-5th graders. I use the Noah Webster 1828 Dictionary to develop a precise and rich vocabulary. I teach the use of Roget's Thesaurus as well. Modern vocabulary is often very poor when it comes to variety, and an educated person knows how to use vocabulary effectively. It is key to great writing as well as communication.

Grammar

I taught grammar for three years to sixth grade students. I grew up surrounded by grammar rules and practices, since English is not my first language and several others were required in my native country. I taught diagramming of sentences for a year. I invented many games to help my students enjoy grammar.

European History

Growing up in Europe, I am well acquainted with European modern history. I have taught about WWI and WWII, the Middle Ages, The Reformation, The Renaissance, The French Revolution as well as Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome.

Reading

I have experience teaching reading to those who struggle. I am versed in effective approaches that encourage interpretation of text and awareness of meaning. I am resourceful when it comes to creative ways of finding enjoyment and success with reading. I am an example of being a devoted reader, who can inspire others. I am patient.

Writing

I have extensive experience teaching formal and creative writing. I taught research skills for three years to sixth graders, and tutored those who struggled. I organized writing workshops that facilitated an unleashing of confidence and creativity. The key to great writing is exposure to and training in what makes up great reading. It begins by simply noticing things around you and in believing you have something worth saying. .

English

I grew up in Europe so English is my second language. Nevertheless, I speak and write it fluently and most people I have met never detect an accent. I was taught the rules of grammar and spelling and adhere to their significance. I am fascinated by etymology and believe in promoting a rich,precise vocabulary. One of my most valued resources is the Noah Webster 1828 Dictionary. Language is constantly evolving and the richness of the English language is a supreme tool of communication.

Government & Politics

I am well versed in current events and issues. I have studied Constitutional history as well as all the major political philosophers. I believe in teaching students to identify principles and their consequences.

Literature

I am well read in classical literature and Modern American literature. I know what marks great writing and love the many opportunities great literature affords for evaluation, decision making and imagination. It is so important that we review, celebrate and even revere great writing. It helps us find who we are. I am interested in all genres and have a keen eye for what serves as valuable literature for young people as well as adults.

Spelling

I have taught the Riggs Spelling method which is phonics based. I am well conversed in the rules of spelling, and open to other methods as well in teaching this skill.

Religion

Raised a Lutheran. Grew up in Sweden where religion was a separate subject in school. Sought for the truth by attending several denominations, and becoming familiar with their doctrines. Converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1973. Many years of studying and teaching the scriptures, and the history of the Jews.
