I have been an English tutor for over 3 years, and absolutely love what I do! I help students from kindergarten to graduate school improve their reading and writing abilities. I firmly believe in every student's capabilities and potential to succeed and that they should be given every possible tool available to help them achieve their goals and dreams. I teach by example and positive reinforcement; I always try to point out what the student has done correctly before offering constructive criticism.

Reading has always been one of my favorite pastimes; I believe books are the key to greater insight and understanding of the world. Some of my favorite books are Jane Eyre, Hamlet, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. One aspect of being a tutor that I enjoy is proofreading papers; I find great pleasure in going through essays or any other assignment in great detail to ensure a student is turning in a quality work.

All in all, I find language arts to be a very fulfilling and enjoyable subject and love helping others find meaning in it as well.

Elementary (K-6th)

I used to be an Elementary Education major for my first two years of college and also volunteered in two different schools for two semesters, one public and one private. I am very experienced working with elementary students, from special education to ESL.

ESL/ESOL

I have a year's experience working with ESL/ESOL students in the public school system and two and a half years' experience working with ESL/ESOL students in an online environment. It is essential to utilize proper educational tools while helping an ESL/ESOL student, to avoid both confusion and frustration. I very much enjoy working with ESL/ESOL clients as they offer unique perspectives and opinions about the English language.

Proofreading

My interest in proofreading began when I would watch my father meticulously read through my essays in high school. I always admired how he knew every grammatical and punctuation rule and marveled that there was so much in a paper that could go wrong. During college, I developed and honed my writing and editing skills. Since then, I have proofread hundreds of papers completed by students ranging in age from Elementary to graduate school. I find great satisfaction in reading an error-ridden paper and helping a student turn it around into a masterpiece.

Public Speaking

Public speaking has always been one of my favorite subjects in both high school and college. I have taken Theater, Debate, and Public Speaking throughout my educational career and have always received excellent grades for them. I believe the #1 trick for beating anxiety in public speaking is to know your subject as well as possible, and also to smile. :)

Reading

From a young age I loved to read, so much so that I would ruin book after book by dropping them in water, spilling food on them, or losing pages. Let's just say the library made some good money off of me with all the replacement fees. I have since turned this passion for reading into a career: I absolutely love helping people fuel their imaginations and find a new love of learning through reading. My experience doing so has included working with children of various ages in the private and public school systems, homeschoolers, and private tutoring clients.

Study Skills

Since high school, I have prided myself on my studying skills. Perhaps it came from the thrill of getting a good grade and public compliment from a teacher whom I greatly admired but regardless, studying effectively has served me well. Every class that I put effort into in high school and college brought me an A, so I know that changing my studying habits was the pivotal decision that helped me excel. My most recent example of how my studying habits have worked is my graduation from college with a B.S. I attended an accelerated online University and had two months to get through 10+ credits. I applied myself and finished in the allotted time with some to spare; if it had not been for my organizational and studying skills I would not have made the deadline and would have needed to enroll in another semester. As I did for myself, I help students define what their studying priorities are and give them ideas on how to study smarter, not necessarily harder.

Writing

Writing...that joyous experience students of all ages must encounter frequently throughout their academic careers. In high school I decided to allow writing to be my ally instead of my enemy and embraced written assignments with a "can-do" attitude. To this day I am thankful I did so. I always received high marks on my papers, partly because language arts is one of my talents but mostly because I applied myself. My experience helping others write has included tutoring students from kindergarten to graduate school, editing papers for family and friends, and having articles published by an online magazine. I hope to one day write a book (or a few) as well, so must stay in practice!
