The ability to read and write is the foundation for success in education and in almost every career in America. I am highly motivated by this belief and have dedicated my life to helping others develop literacy skills. I have a doctorate degree specializing in reading instruction and have conducted research to identify the best instructional methods to help struggling readers succeed. I taught reading as a first grade teacher for ten years and have provided training and support for classroom teachers and reading specialists for 21 years in a large school district. I want to prevent reading failure, therefore, if your child is struggling with reading the time to help him/her is now. If you and your child are committed to developing the skills needed for success, I am committed to providing the expert assistance needed to make this happen!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I have a Ph.D. in Literacy Development, instruction and support of striving readers. Provided professional learning for special education teachers, ELL teachers, teachers of the deaf and blind and reading specialists in the diagnostic assessment and prescriptive delivery of instruction, all groups served students with reading problems/dyslexia.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a licensed elementary teacher who has successfully completed an undergraduate program, taught in the elementary school for ten years, was a principal over elementary schools for 10 years, and oversaw elementary literacy in a large school district for 11 years.

Phonics

I have a Ph.D. with a specialization in Reading. Taught synthetic phonics for 11 years. I taught synthetic, analytic and analogy phonics methods to reading specialists and in graduate reading classes.

Reading

Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction, focus on reading and language arts.
Curriculum Director over K-12 reading in a large district including classroom teachers, reading specialists, reading coaches and all reading intervention programs, 11 years.
Reading/Language arts teacher for ten years.
Principal supervising reading/language arts for 10 years.

Spelling

As an elementary grade teacher I have developed a deep understanding of the phonetic structure of the English Language. As students understand the patterns, spelling, for the most part, becomes very logical. An understanding of the Greek and Latin bases is very helpful for older students who are learning to spell content words. I use Words Their Way and other teaching resources to develop an understanding of spelling.

Vocabulary

The key to teaching vocabulary is to identify words that are critical for understanding text (referred to as Tier 2 words). Once words have been identified for the student I teach them how to use context clues, how to recognize when the author has supported understanding of new vocabulary and word part meanings to develop understanding. I gained this knowledge when I completed a reading endorsement program at Utah State University.
