You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives. ~Clay P. Bedford

I earned a Ph.D. doing Genetics research at university. Learning is always fascinating to me, going beyond myself, one step at a time. A concept is not just a concept, it has an infinite number of aspects to be understood and appreciated. I am fascinated by the depth any seemingly simple concept can bring, be it in Math, Physics, Biology or Chinese. At the deepest level, all knowledge is connected and the network gives us a glimpse of the Truth.

Teaching, on the other hand, is also learning for me: every student is different. It is my job to learn what works and what makes sense to each student, how they think and what appeals to them. Their challenges are mine too. My goal is to unlock the joy of learning for them and show them how to teach themselves. A life-long learner is in everyone of us, it is up to us to discover the unique learner we already are.

Thank you for reading! Let's learn together, we will find the way through.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I tutor all ACT subjects. ACT prep is a great way to consolidate the knowledge and bring student's understanding of the subjects to a higher ground. By going through the topics rapidly, new connections are discovered. That is when advanced learning takes place. Through ACT prep, the student truly gains a better grasp of the subject, which will be carried on to college. Of course the test score will increase as a consequence as well.

Algebra 1

All numbers represent something in real life. Algebra is all about the relationships among the numbers. In fact, in Algebra, numbers are not important at all, and that is why they could be replaced by letters. A lot of concepts in Algebra can be traced back into elementary math, such as expanding brackets in an equation. I can explain to you how it is done if you let me.

Chinese

I am a Chinese from mainland China, left the country in my 20s.

I am very good at reading, writing and conversational Chinese. These skills are hard to lose.

Also I am teaching my son and husband Chinese at home. Being able to explain and make sense those Chinese characters and expressions helps me to teach. The most effective way of teaching is when the material makes sense.

I am great with children and they like me a lot. This helps in a tutoring situation as well.

Elementary Math

Working with elementary Math is fun. It is very rewarding to see the students 'get it' and apply newly learned math concepts in real life. Those concepts in turn lay a solid foundation to a successful life in the future for them.

Genetics

I earned a Ph.D. doing Genetics research at the U. Genetics is a test on how well student can think along a set of criteria. It usually start with very simple rules, with the advancement of learning, more complex rules are introduced. The simple rules are the key to Genetics, the complex ones can be explained as variations of the simple ones. In a nutshell, Genetics is very elegant. Let me show you how everything fits perfectly in Genetics as a completed Sudoku puzzle.

Macintosh

I use Mac, iPad, iPod all day long

Physical Science

Classical Physics is pure logic. Once the problem is properly dissected into constants and variables, the answer usually is quite straightforward. Yet the skill to dissect a problem seems elusive. I teach classical Physics by doing thought experiments, sometimes real ones when they are not too explosive. Bringing everyday phenomena into lessons help students to make connections and understand better. Naturally, better understanding translates into better problem solving techniques.

Physiology

Human body is a fascinating 'machine'. The principles of Physics and Chemistry rule the machine yet the internal regulation does wonders the ordinary machines can't even dream of, even if they could dream.
The key to mastering this complex system is to figure out what is the major force at any certain situation. I can help you simplify the system so that it makes sense.
I had an offer to teach Human Physiology to Pre Nursing students at Westminster college. Eventually I had to turn it down because of personal reasons. It would be fun to be able to really teach it.

Public Speaking

I have been an active member for Toastmasters International for a long time. I have completed the basic manual and earned both Competent Communicator and Competent Leader certificates. In club meetings, I frequently evaluate other member's speeches and developed good listening skills and recommendation styles. In addition, I am a very logical thinker, I look for logic flow in developing ideas. This helps me compose rhetorical arguments. On the other hand, my observation of successful speeches over time cultivates my intuition on how a speaker can take advantage of his/her strength to develop rapport with the audience.
