I have been a certified teacher for eight years, teaching a mixture of third- and fourth-grade students. However, for four years previous to that, I substitute taught in all grades and volunteered a couple times a week in a fifth-grade classroom, helping with math, social studies, and language arts.

Besides my elementary education degree, I have a bachelor's degree in English, with an emphasis in technical writing. I have been previously employed as a writer for a newspaper and as an assistant editor for a magazine.

I specialize in finding innovative ways to teach. One thing I do especially well is make up mnemonic devices in the form of short songs. A couple examples are a parts of speech song I wrote and a song about rounding numbers.

I am currently working toward a gifted and talented endorsement at Utah State University one evening a week.

Because I run interventions in my classroom for language arts and for math, I have a wealth of resources at my disposal.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a current Utah teaching license. I teach third grade and currently have a student teacher.

Elementary Math

I teach elementary math every day in my classroom. What better person to tutor than someone who is immersed in it every day, helping students of all levels become successful? I also teach math interventions twice a week, meaning I work at a remedial level with students constantly. I know how to adjust to a particular student's pace.

English

I have a bachelor's degree in English with a technical writing emphasis. My classes included American literature, British literature, grammar, indexing, and technical emphases. I also have professional experience, working as a writer for a newspaper and an editor for a magazine.

ESL/ESOL

I have an endorsement in ESL from the Northern Utah Curriculum Consortium. I have ESL students in my class nearly every year. I know how it works.

General Music

I teach piano lessons. I have played the piano for 26 years now. I also play the organ for my local church congregation. I have also appeared in small-town productions of shows in which I had a small singing part.

Phonics

As a third-grade teacher, I focus on making sure all my students become proficient in phonics. Most students have developed phonics skills by third grade, but I have some of the slower learning kids who still struggle with it. So I know how to teach it in a step-by-step, structured manner.

Piano

I've played the piano for 26 years now. I also teach piano to one student...just a neighborhood contact.

Praxis

I took the Praxis (both the essay and the multiple choice) and attained the level that earned me a certificate for being in the top 15 percent of scorers.

Study Skills

Teachers know how to research and organize. I'd be happy to impart of my knowledge to someone who needs help with study skills.
