I have 25 years experience in tutoring students of all ages, many who are bilingual, who have struggled with reading, writing, speaking and problem solving. I enjoy working one-on-one, using the student's learning style and strengths to reinforce weak areas. I have worked with all the different types and combinations of learning difficulties.

My goal is to help the student become an independent thinker and learner - teaching him/her how to "swim" rather than simply throwing out a life jacket for the one-time save. My philosophy is to lead the student through guided questioning to make his own discoveries - a much more rewarding experience than simply showing him the answers. I use multi-modalities in my approach and believe that the learning experience is a total person involvement which can be enjoyable for both student and tutor, making it a reciprocal learning experience.

By working one-on-one with a student, we can reinforce the student's weak areas in basic skills in reading, writing and spelling, as well as helping him to discover strategies for problem-solving and retention.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I taught a special SAT and ACT prep course in a homeschool venue two years ago. I have also helped numerous of my own family to prepare for these exams. I am especially qualified to teach the English/grammar and reading sections. I help the student to understand how to read the questions or statements and what to look for in answering. The student learns to recognize key words and key phrases.

ADD/ADHD

Having been trained as a learning disability therapist, I have diagnosed and worked with many ADD/ADHD students. I use techniques that help them to focus better, as well as utilize their desire for movement and varied activities. I also help them to understand what they need in order to be able to learn and function in the standard classroom situation. Besides working on the specific material, I train them to approach learning in a way that meets their specific needs.

Bible Studies

I had three years of Bible Institute training plus a bachelor's degree in religious education. I have taught all ages Bible subjects, Bible studies and related subjects for 50 years in two different languages.

Dyslexia

I was professionally certified by the Norfolk Institute for Learning Disabilities in 1990 and have functioned as a learning disability therapist since then, working in both English and Italian. I use many of the techniques learned in that program in my tutoring/teaching.

English

For any student, English can be a puzzle, a cake recipe, a building project, a problem to solve. Whatever it is for you, let's work on it together! I'll be your coach.

ESL/ESOL

I took a special ESL course and have worked with ESL students throughout my years in Italy as well as in Korea where I worked with college students for 9 months in 2010-2011.

Grammar

My approach is to help the student visualize the structure of language so that he will be better able to express himself in writing and in understanding complex writing.
A good grasp of English grammar is essential for understanding structure in learning other languages.

Italian

I lived and worked in Italy for 29 years, functioning completely in Italian. I have taught Italian I and Italian II to homeschoolers since returning to the USA.

Phonics

I have been trained in specific phonics techniques using various maniuplatives. The system is based on the Gillingham/Stillman method and uses all of the senses. My experience covers more than 30 years with monolingual and bilingual students.

Proofreading

Proofreading is essential for seeing spelling and punctuation errors. It is also important for ensuring clarity of thinking.
Dictation and copy is a procedure that I often use to help the student to stretch his short-term auditory memory, visualize words and groups of words, and to discover his own errors and learn to make the proper corrections.

Reading

The goal in tutoring reading is to help the student to find his ideal method of comprehension and memorization. Learning reading and study skills have proven to be helpful to many of my students.

SAT Reading

I taught a special SAT and ACT prep course in a homeschool venue two years ago. I have also helped numerous of my own family to prepare for these exams. I am especially qualified to teach the English/grammar and reading sections. I help the student to understand how to read the questions or statements and what to look for in answering. The student learns to recognize key words and key phrases.

Spelling

Spelling is understanding structure of words. I use many different modalities to help students visualize these structures and remember them. I was a champion speller in junior high school and I love words!

Study Skills

I have taught students study skills over a period of 35 years, including my own two sons whom I homeschooled during junior high and high school years. Any student that I work with who is having difficulties in school is taught some study skills and strategies based on the student's style of learning and remembering. I have special training in helping students with difficulties and studying is always involved in these difficulties so strategies must be developed for studying more effectively.

TOEFL

I have taught TOEFL preparation to home school students as well as to Korean college students.
The purpose of this course is to help the student to know how to approach the test, how to understand what it asks for, and how to think through his choices.

Vocabulary

Word games can be fun and very rewarding for expanding language beyond the few hundred words most of us use in everyday language. Again, learning structure, making connections, and having an adventuresome spirit can make vocabulary words become desirable friends instead of insurmountable obstacles.

Writing

Writing is expressing what I am thinking in a clear and interesting manner with appropriate language and correct form and structure. It is a complex task and the student can be helped to break it down into manageable bites.
