I began my teaching career by teaching our two sons at home for 11 years. Our younger son is moderately to severely dyslexic with ADHD. I studied how to teach students with reading and writing difficulties and successfully brought him up to grade level work by sixth grade. In 7th grade we enrolled him in a private school where he was mainstreamed in regular classes. I taught elementary classes and then high school English at that same school. Both our sons graduated with good grades and have had careers in music and art ever since. They write lyrics and newsletters as hobbies and volunteer work.
While a home school teacher, I began to teach music and public speaking to other home educated students and to tutor both dyslexic and reluctant learners in phonics, reading comprehension, and writing at all grade levels from private and public schools and in all subjects. My tutoring experiences have all been excitingly successful. I have especially enjoyed helping students gain confidence in their ability to learn and helping their parents to relax and focus on their children's strengths.
My older son and I do not have learning disabilities, so I have also enjoyed preparing all students for college in reading comprehension and writing. I majored in history with a minor in English and education and have recently earned a master's degree in education with an English Language Learners specialization. I like to teach English, history, geography, economics, political science, and sociology in combination and use art and music appreciation whenever I can. Those subjects can also be infused with math and science as well. In life we do not experience one subject alone at any time and so it should be with childhood education as well, although each subject should be emphasized for classroom and testing purposes.
I am currently an adjunct instructor at a local college, teaching integrated reading and writing. I have recently substituted for four years in our public high school. I enjoyed the mix of cultures and languages our students brought to the classroom. I love teen humor and sharing my experiences with that age group.
