Are you looking for help with your essay, research paper, or short story?

I am an experienced English instructor and tutor, with a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of North Texas and a master’s degree in creative writing from Goddard College. I taught writing in college for several years, and have also tutored students of all ages to communicate more effectively with the written word. I never write or rewrite assignments for my students -- rather, I provide the guidance they need to improve their work themselves. My students come away from our sessions more confident in their writing abilities, and with a greater chance of successfully tackling that next writing assignment.

Writing is a process, and can be a tricky one, but with the proper steps in place, from initial brainstorming through full revisions, it can be painless. If any part of the writing process has you frazzled, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I’m here to help!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

My Bachelor's degree is in English, and I've spent years tutoring and teaching the subject. Even as a young person, English was my favorite class -- I've always loved reading and writing, and I was lucky to have some good teachers along the way who encouraged my interest and helped me develop my skills. As an instructor, I always look forward to sharing my passion for English with my students.

Grammar

As an English tutor, I’ve enjoyed helping students of all ages with grammar. As a college writing instructor, I held “grammar days” each semester to work on the biggest problem areas. I find that recognizing and correcting even small grammar slip-ups can dramatically improve the quality of a writing assignment.

Literature

As a college instructor, I taught not only writing courses but literature as well. Good writers are good readers!

Reading well involves more than just identifying the characters and basic storyline in a work. Let's crack open the story and look at the themes and deeper questions raised within -- this is a practice that will enrich your life both within school and out!

Proofreading

One of my goals as a college writing instructor was that my students realize the importance of rewriting. To help them, I always gave each first draft a full proofread to make their work easier.

There's nothing like a second set of eyes to read over that first draft, to point out odd sentences, misspellings, and even logical problems. I proofread hundreds of papers as a tutor and teacher -- proofreading is one of my specialties!

Proofreading is not editing -- it's pointing out suggested areas for the writer to look over more closely in the next draft. Having a well-written final draft is often the difference between a B and an A.

Vocabulary

Back when I studied writing in grad school, I was also reading a novel each week. This was a fairly quick pace for me -- luckily I had made it a practice years before to look up words I didn't know. My vocabulary improved and so did my reading comprehension!

It's never too late to improve one's vocabulary. Let's work together to make it happen!

Writing

Writing is my main area of expertise. I hold a BA in English and an MFA in creative writing. I've tutored hundreds of students of all ages in English and taught writing courses at the college level for several years.

As a writing tutor, I can help with all aspects of the writing process. Let's talk about your assignment and hammer out a plan of action!
