I graduated and have worked for several years as a Mechanical Engineer, with a Masters degree in Business Administration. I have worked as a tutor in a variety of topics, though primarily in mathematics (pre-algebra, algebra, trigonometry and through calculus) and science (physics, chemistry and biology). I have worked at times as a substitute teacher for nearly every subject across the high school and middle school curriculum. I am active with the Boy Scouts of America as an adult leader, and with the local Astronomy Group and can bring these subjects to life for my students with 'real-world' descriptions and applications. I enjoy tutoring students of any ages that are motivated to learn.

Testimonials

"Great tutor, easy to reach by phone"

- JACKIE, Texarkana, TX on 12/1/10
Michael replied on 4/20/2012

Working with you was definitely a pleasure, Ms Jackie. The statistical work you were tasked with was challenging and interesting for even an experienced tutor, and making clear, understandable explanations for the concepts and the methods for getting to the final analysis made this a most interesting assignment indeed.
Many thanks for your kind words, and for your own hard work.

"Great tutor"

- Michelle, Texarkana, AR on 10/29/12
Michael replied on 10/30/2012

I appreciate your comment very much, Ms. Michelle. Working with your daughter was exactly the type of work I most enjoy - a young person, motivated and interested, asking good questions, and working hard while being tutored, and also on her own later. It makes this work very fulfilling.

"Chemistry "

- Loranda, Texarkana, TX on 4/18/12
Michael replied on 4/20/2012

I truly appreciate your kind words, Ms Loranda.
While chemistry isn't my strongest forte, the mathematical basis for so much of it is an area I can help with, and you were certainly a good listener. Definitely a pleasure to have helped you.
Keep up your studies, and good luck for the future.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chess

I have played chess since a youth (over 40 years). I frequently have used chess as a training tool while working as a substitute teacher in high schools. I am well known in our local Boy Scout Council for always have a chess board (or two) with me at scouting events, to give a different challenge to some of the boys. As a result of this, I have been used as the Council Chess Merit Badge Counselor for the (fairly new) Chess Merit Badge. I am familiar with all the basic moves, and the lesser-known moves and rules (en-passant, castling, draws, 40-move rule etc).

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored at a stand-alone tutoring shop (Mathnasium) primarily aimed at elementary school children and math. In addition, I have done substitute teaching in all grades of basic schooling, from elementary school through high school. I've tutored some students that are taking home-schooling courses, to enable them to better understand the concepts being presented in the course.
