General Science/Math/History/Business/Finance/and Other Jr-Sr HS

I am a retiree from Shell Oil Company and active member in Mensa. During my 35 year career, I held a number of positions from Accountant to Fleet Manager to Business Systems Design and Development. With this background and the experience I acquired in class and on the job, I was or became proficient in the Sciences, Math, History, Business Management and Finance, Computer Applications and Industry Regulatory issues (Microsoft, SAP and others) which were supported by a natural talent for speaking and writing. At any given time, I had one or two individuals for whom I mentored during their first couple of years with Shell. Currently, I have been assisting doctoral candidates at Sam Houston State, by editing their research dissertations in Psychology. In addition I have been designing and producing expense and budget reports for a small local company using Microsoft database tools.

I have also been a member of the social organization, Mensa for almost 40 years. Whether it is the organization that drives me or whether it is something within myself driving me, since joining I have had an insatiable desire to learn things - all kinds of things ... almost everything I am capable of learning. I no longer read fiction because I can think up better fictional stories as anyone else. I enjoy reading about the research and learnings of others - especially when it comes from the researcher or scientist themselves, for when someone does something unique or discovers something new, its a wonderful experience for others to hear it straight from the source in order to get the full and unabridged story. Indeed, I've learned to keep my thoughts to myself until I'm sure that what I'm going to say is accurate - and then say what I have to say in a way that it is easily understood by those who wish to know. Else, what's the use? Someone who knows everything, but can speak nothing that can be understood, effectively knows nothing. I've practiced hard and I've pleased myself over the years by being able to bring the news of whatever I know to others.

My methods for tutoring include familiarizing myself with material for which the student is seeking a tutor, learning from the student themselves what the expect and require, engaging the student with the material and ensuring the student masters the material. The exact means for using a particular method will depend on the student's requirements and temperament with a view in turn to their classroom and curriculum requirements.

Biology

Biology was my first major in college. I took a number of courses, including some in developmental biology and genetics. Today, as with Astronomy, I am an interested and knowledgeable layperson who keeps up with the science by means of subject periodicals and books which, when I was employed, were supplied by my employer who encouraged acquisition of new knowledge from multiple disciplines. Now retired, I continue staying up to date by the same means on my own account.

Grammar

I was exposed to all the grammar lessons in grade school through high school that everyone else experienced. Microsoft Excel

My experience with Microsoft's Excel application is much like that I've had with Access. Excel is presented as a spreadsheet and is used exactly that way - keeping track of lists of things and performing operations on and about them. Geometry

My career was spent in the pipeline segment of a major oil company. This segment of the company owned thousands of miles of pipelines all over the country. Geometry and the knowledge of lines, angles, dimensions, circumferences and how it was all put together was indispensable for a successful experience with the company. In addition in high school and college, geometry was one of my favorite subjects and the one in which I excelled.

Microsoft Word

Along with the rest of the suite of Microsoft applications, I have used MS Word for many years and I am familiar with virtually all features of the product. It is the primary vehicle I use in my professional and private writing, of which I have many thousands of examples. It is one of the easiest of Microsoft's products to learn and use, being almost intuitive for the basic experience. Once learned, there are few substitutes outside the Mac world.

Reading

With younger children, my first effort it to understand where the child’s base is, that is, what specific issues are the problem and whether those issues extend into the past. Next is to understand the requirements of the parent and the teaching authority.
