Hi everyone,
My name is Myra, and I would love to be your tutor!
I graduated with a B.A. from U Penn in international relations. I have experience tutoring reading and phonics, ESL, and LSAT prep. Though I tutor students of all ages, I patiently and kindly help all of my students in the same way. I find that repetition isn't always the answer - I try to explain concepts from different angles or with examples that the student can understand better. I know how frustrating it can feel to be confused in class or when preparing for an exam, so I eagerly look forward to helping my students realize their full potential.
SAT
I was selected as a National Merit Semi-finalist for my PSAT score and received a 700+ in all three sections of the SAT, including a perfect score for the critical reading section. As a tutor, I can bring the tricks and techniques of a test prep course to a convenient one-on-one setting, where we can focus on the student's specific needs and challenges. For vocabulary, I like to practice using new words in sentences and prepare vocab quizzes at each lesson to gradually increase the student's vocabulary skills. For the rest of the skills, I teach techniques for each of the different types of questions of each section. I use practice questions and tests issued directly from the CollegeBoard, since I think it's the best use of my students' time to focus on authentic materials directly from the test makers.
LSAT
I have tutored LSAT classes and took the October 2011 test and scored a 172. Having taken an LSAT prep course, I know the tricks that they teach in classes and can bring that knowledge to a convenient, one-on-one setting that's ideal for targeting a student's specific weaknesses. For LSAT tutoring, I generally help students go over practice tests that they take ahead of time, and I explain the questions that they got wrong. After a few tests, I can target patterned mistakes that students make and explain these mistakes in the broader logic of the exam.
READING
I tutored elementary and middle school children in reading and basic math on a weekly basis for 3 years. Developing a strong fundamental understanding of phonics is the key to learning how to read. I encourage students to sound out words and try to make learning fun.
ESL
I co-taught two adult ESL classes, literacy and advanced conversation. I created lesson plans, led class activities, and tutored students one-on-one.
