Thanks for checking out my profile! I believe anybody can succeed; my lessons are practical, fun and encouraging! I've been coaching/tutoring for 23 years, currently teach driver's education, swimming and tutor various subjects. We all need to be valued and understood so my goal is to give the student a love for learning putting them on the pathway to success!
I'm an avid student of God's word so I'm constantly reading and researching. I'll explain precepts to apply to your life as I believe it's vital to understand what God's telling us, how much HE loves us! I spent two years at Bible school, have way too many books and a passion for people. I am currently in class on Thursday evenings as I'm constantly wanting more- would like to share what I've learned with others. Blessings to you.
I LOVE MUSIC!!! All types, mostly loud...Ha! I go to concerts, symphony, spent some years in New Orleans and grew to enjoy Blues, Jazz, and Gospel. I grew up on Easy Listening, Praise & Worship, Christian, Musicals, Rock-n-Roll, Instrumental, Bands (A&M AGGIE BAND is the best)! I appreciate various styles. I have sung in choirs all my life and now I'm learning guitar. I taught piano for 12 years and all of my kids know how to read music. Three of the four pursued an instrument and did band for 6 years. Music is one of few hobbies we can continue into our senior years - to be loved always! It's the universal language, yes?!
I will show somebody how to sew, knit, needlepoint, crewel, quilt or crosstich. My mom taught me how and I've loved staying busy with a project most of my life. I still have some supplies if they'd like to borrow mine (quilting/fabrics/needles). I don't have a sewing machine anymore but would gladly help on theirs. I'm patient and can explain the steps easily, even clarify the instructions on a pattern.
I believe in a healthy lifestyle. Our bodies can't/don't run on empty calories, neglect or abuse. Fitness is vital and I'm trying to get my Personal Trainer certification so I'm doing some studying myself in this area.
I'm an avid gardener so I'll teach about food choices, organic/natural differences, cooking ideas with recipes to try. Reading & understanding food labels are discussed so better choices are made at the store. Also, I'll explain some anatomy, effects of drugs/alcohol and exercise benefits. Health science is really big now and it starts with learning about how the body is fueled, I think.
Illness & disease can be prevented if one takes care of themselves - knowing how to eat is vital to a energetic, strong and vibrant lifestyle.
When a child is learning to put letters, sounds, then words together, phonics helps with correct pronunciation and spelling. It is an important step that cannot be missed. Quite often it's not taught well, if at all. I'll show how/why one should learn blends, short/long vowels, accents, and pronunciation symbols. I even teach the use of a dictionary to look up words for sounds/spelling/definitions. Reading is the next step to master by putting thoughts into words which then conveys a story. Speech is important also, as the tones, inflection and enunciation are used to bring life into conversations. In learning English, a proper foundation is phonics, the core structure of this beautiful yet challenging language.
I've played the piano since I was a child. I was a music major (voice & piano), and have taught piano many years (various ages). I accompanied a choir, kid's choir, and played at nursing homes. I teach finger drills, dexterity, theory, counting and scales. I can teach student to read music, then allows them to learn any other instrument. Previous students have gone into choir, band or orchestra. Music is a skill/talent that can be enjoyed throughout one's life, unlike other hobbies.
Oh, the joy of hearing a voice singing with feeling, energy and on pitch! We'll begin with easy & fun methods of learning music basics. If there is no previous knowledge, I'll use piano/guitar to show some drills to practice which will help reading music. First, some staff/note training with tricks for counting & hearing intervals. Second, more learning about how to do rhythms, beats and measures. These music theories help to know how the songs are to sound when sung on key. Generally, learning to sing with an instrument is helpful with the chance of playing it in the future. Sight-singing can be learned while appreciating all styles of music. Singing is so rewarding...even if only in the shower!
I've tutored and assisted in the classroom per teachers' request. I will advise student in managing time, organizing, note taking tips, preview/review for testing, study strategies, and goal setting. All of these are basic to knowing how to overcome struggles by giving practical methods one can use. I will describe learning styles, teachers' expectations, listening skills and specific hints/tips & shortcuts in subjects. Planning, documenting, and efficient objectives will be implemented to assist in student's progress. I'll set them on the road to success!
I've been a swimmer all of my life, coached summer league and taught at swim schools. I have been teaching privately for 7 years and have success stories of near-drowning incidents where the student got out safely &/or saved someone. I'm very safety minded and focus on swimming skills that will save a life- it's the only sport that can make that claim!
I have done returns in the past for friends and enjoyed helping them. The last three years I've helped with AARP and I'm currently taking a 10 week review (36 hrs) with Liberty Tax Services and getting CEUs through Jackson Hewitt. It can be quite difficult to keep up with new changes in laws for the average tax payer (unless a CPA), especially now that "E-filing" is required. Let me help you get your deductions/credits, itemize and lower your tax liability! Why pay Uncle Sam anymore than necessary?
