Hello! My name is Jennifer, and I love helping people with math and chemistry.
I began tutoring math to college students in 2010, and found that I absolutely loved it. Since then, I have continued to tutor encourage college students in math, and have extended my services to high school students who need help in both math and science.
I have developed a more hands-on approach to my tutoring methods. Instead of simply showing students how to "do problems," I coach my students through each step of the problem-solving process. I do not skip steps with my students, and try to give as effective, thorough and insightful a lesson as possible. Not only do I try to impart my knowledge of math, chemistry and biology to my students, I deliver lessons in a patient and friendly manner, and even try to bring a sense of humor in order to make my students feel more at ease and relaxed. I found that this actually helps to make lessons more effective and productive for everyone involved, students, tutor, parents and teachers alike.
My educational background consists of a heavy dose of science and math, especially biology. I hold an Associate's degree in General Math and Science, Magna Cum Laude, from Lone Star College-Tomball. In the Fall of this year, I will enter a two year course of study to gain Advanced Biotechnology Certification from the Biotechnology Institute at Lone Star College-Montgomery. After this, I will enter the workforce as a bio-technician, but I will ALWAYS continue to tutor students!
Thank you for viewing my profile and your interest in my services! I am always happy to help new students who require a regular tutoring schedule. I hope to hear from you soon!
This is the subject with which I first began tutoring math students. Here is where I believe it is important to teach students become truly "self-sufficient" in their math journey: I do not allow the use of calculators when I help Algebra students. I believe they need to develop their algebra skills with the use of their own mind and good old-fashioned pencil and paper. This is how I learned math, and I believe I have strong math skills because of that.
This is where Algebra gets more involved but more exciting. Here is where I like to help students really become algebra experts so they are better prepared for higher levels of math. In addition to their regular assignments, I like to give students supplemental problems that provide extra but fun challenges, so they can strengthen their problem-solving skills.
Chemistry is a fun science that often requires specific calculations- this is where I can help. With my strong algebra and problem-solving skills, I am able to help students with both chemical calculations and lab reports. I can also help students understand some of the more abstract laws and theories of chemistry.
Geometry is one of the more fun topics within math, and one that I like to help students with in particular. With some basic geometry formulas, the students can solve almost any type of geometry problem. I believe it is my job as a tutor to help students learn which formulas to apply to solve problems. I also use a lot of drawings and solid model tools to help students visualize geometric shapes.
This is a subject where I find it is really important to make sure students have a firm foundation in algebra and trigonometry, in order to get them ready for the challenges they will meet in Calculus. I work with students to make sure they are able to successfully handle the very heavy algebra that they encounter in this class. I often find it is necessary to give students supplemental algebra and trigonometry problems along with their coursework, so they do not fall behind when they begin Calculus.
This is a subject where I use a lot of algebra, drawings and visualizations to help students understand problems. Trigonometry is heavily dependent on visualization and geometry, and I make sure that this is addressed when helping students. There is also quite a bit of algebra involved with this subject, and I make sure that students have a good understanding of algebraic concepts, so they do not fall behind on topics such as inverses and trigonometric identities.
