I attended college from 2001-2007 and graduated with honors, Magna Cum Laude, with specializations in piano pedagogy and voice pedagogy. I also have a valid Texas teaching certificate from preK through 12th grade. I've been teaching private instruction in piano and voice for 12 years now. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My experience with learning ear training is having a teacher give me a 4-8 measure set of rhythms and I had to repeat it back to her on staff paper. On melodies, ear training teaches a person how to memorize melodies and sing or play them back after they are played to the student.
As part of my musical education, I was required to undergo a very difficult 4 semester set of courses in sight singing, which gave me the tools to teach the course extremely well.
When teaching general music, the first concept that is vital is to make sure your student understands rhythms and the value of each note. They should see a relation between rhythm and mathematics. Afterwards, you can add pitch, depending on the instrument. If they are singing, I prefer the the sol- fege method with the rhythm.

Music history is the study of music as how music is written in the time period in which it was written. This course can be complex because we as musicians are to study the difference in all aspects of composition and phrasing and notations from one period to another.

This is your time when you go over a piece of music you have never seen nor sung before in your life. To be successful, you must have your intervals memorized. A good vocal coach can skillfully teach interval reading, which is the difference between 2 pitches. Testing this skill is called melodic dictation.
Also, a student needs the major rhythms at the length each note is held. Plus, the student should be able to hear basic rhythmic patterns and repeats.
I took 4 courses of intense training on learning the skills of sight singing while I was in college. It is an enjoyable course to learn but it's difficult to explain on paper what the course description is.
Voice, along with piano, was my other concentration I had while getting my music degree. I have special certification to teach voice. If you are looking for a top of the line voice teacher, two things should be considered. One, are they truly qualified? Do they have a degree in voice? And two, can they play a piano during lessons? Most voice teachers cannot play for their students. They have the students sing to a cd. That is NOT good teaching. I come with a set of high credentials and a bachelors degree in voice and piano.
