Knowledge, Experience, Patience ... and a good sense of humor!

I've been a successful freelance writer since 1995, having written a series of AutoCAD textbooks (AutoCAD 20xx: One Step at a Time), several how-to books, and even a few works of fiction! My strength lies in my ability to take a complicated subject (such as AutoCAD, MS Office products, or even English or American Sign Language) and simplify it into something we "normal" folks can understand.

I earned my teaching degree from Lamar University back in 1977, with fields in History and Biology, and later added Industrial Education (Sam Houston St. U.) and English/English Language Arts (U. of Houston) as teaching fields. I'm currently studying to become a sign language (ASL) interpreter at North Harris College.

My life has been one of learning and teaching. I'm experienced in many fields, patient, and I have a terrific sense of humor (just try teaching without one!).

Vocabulary

Our vocabulary improves/increases with time and exposure to our language. But some fundamentals can help. For example, the word "Biology" actually consists of a simple prefix - "Bio" meaning "Life", and a suffix - "ology" meaning "the study of". Now take the prefix and add it to "sphere" (meaning environment) and your get Biosphere - the life containing environment of a planet. Or try the prefix "Zoo" (meaning animal) and add it to "ology". Grammar

Nothing tells a prospective employer that you have the determination to succeed like a good education; and nothing tells that employer that you have a good education like the way you speak.
Or more simply put, "murder the language and stand in the assembly line the rest of your life; speak English and sit in the office."
I love the language, and I love teaching others to enjoy it ... and speak it properly.

Microsoft Excel

Nothing implies organization like a good spreadsheet! And nothing works so well for a lazy person (like me) than using a computer application like Excel to handle the mundane chores of a spreadsheet!

General Computer

In 1988, my wife wanted me to buy our first computer.
"I don't know anything about computers," I complained.
"Yeah," she said. "But you can type."
She convinced me ... and it was a match made in heaven!
Now I enjoy helping other people get comfortable with this 21st Century necessity!

Microsoft Word

I've been a writer since the early 70s. But I have to say that, until the advent of computers, writing required a colossal waste of paper to create a simple short story.
Word processing saved my bacon (and a few zillion trees)!
In the new century, MS Word leads the world in the written word. I can help you master it to your benefit!

Reading

The best way to learn to read is simply to read. But you can improve your comprehension (sometimes dramatically) by discussing what you've read. And frankly, no one enjoys discussing reading like me!

Writing

There's an old adage - I believe it originated with Mark Twain - that goes, "I love to have written." Truer words may never have been written!
Unfortunately, to arrive at the "have written" success, one must first actually write.
I've been a freelance writer (the hardest type of writer to become as it requires so much self-discipline) professionally since 1995. I can help you master the tools you'll need to succeed to that "have written" stage of your projects.

English

One of the most important things I teach my English students relates to their future jobs. I insist that, in order to earn an executive's pay, you must speak like an executive. It isn't difficult, and can be fun!

HTML

I can't count the number of web pages I've designed using various applications. But the only commonality that links all web page design applications is HTML. I can help you achieve a good foundation here so that you can shine with those other tools!

Literature

Long before the written word (or television), humans learned from each other through the telling of good stories. With the advent of literature, we learned to preserve those stories and reach infinitely greater numbers of people. Let's share some of those stories.
(I promise, once you learn to love good literature, you may never want to watch that television again!)

Proofreading

I've been a freelance writer since 1995. I can tell you that a good proofreader is worth his/her weight in gold!

Web Design

I own and operate two business that rely heavily on webstores. I have created and manage both stores.
I'm comfortable with HTML (having taught it at Houston Community College) and several of the web-creation applications available today.

Adobe Photoshop

I've used Adobe Photoshop for about five years. My textbooks and a couple joke books I've written rely heavily on graphics and, although I began with PaintShop Pro, Photoshop has proven itself a real workhorse in graphic manipulation!

Sign Language

My teaching credentials include: History, Biology, English, English Language Arts, and Industrial Education. I also have 35 more recent hours in ASL, including two years of language classes and a year of interpreting classes. My GPA in the ASL program is 3.8. I volunteer as interpreter and language assistant at the college and my church. I'm quite comfortable with the language and look forward to becoming an ASL teacher in the future.

AutoCAD

I've written more than 20 textbooks on AutoCAD - both basic 2D and advanced 3D. You can even find my books on Amazon.com. I began publishing with Prentice Hall in 1999, and took over the publishing responsibilities (as well as the research and writing) in 2003.

Desktop Publishing

I began publishing my textbooks with Prentice Hall in 1999, and took over the publishing responsibilities in 2003. I handle all POD and eBook publishing details through my own publishing house - Forager Publications. The MS Office products (Word, Excel, Access, Publisher) have proven themselves many times over during this process, although I also rely on Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat quite heavily as well.
