Hello and good day! I am currently working as the At-Risk coordinator for a local public school district, with 7 years prior as the Math coordinator, 3 years as Math/Science middle/high school facilitator, and 7 years of teaching math and science to middle and high school students in a public alternative school.
I have a lot of experience working with kids who are experiencing difficulty in passing state tests (TAKS Exit Level, STAAR EOC, even old TAAS!!!) and nationally-administered college tests (SAT, ACT, some ASVAB help) as well as local certification tests like the GRE. I can help you on both sides of the equation - I have extensive experience in math and science content teaching, have worked in consulting positions for math and science software providers, graded national tests in reading and science for companies such as Pearson and Harcourt, and have also worked with kids who have significant learning and behavior challenges to help them succeed in their studies.
I have also written math and science questions for companies such as Examgen and McGraw-Hill at the secondary level, so I am very familiar with how and why questions are asked on standardized tests. Finally, I have sat on a review panel for elementary grade math test creation for the Texas Education Agency, and am familiar with the process by which test questions are selected for Texas standardized tests.
I tutor in a "formally informal" manner. I can come to you or meet you in a neutral location (such as a Starbucks or public library), and request only a few formal rules: be on time, ask any question that comes to mind, and never leave with a question unresolved. I will spend as much time as needed on any topic until my student UNDERSTANDS the material - I don't let kids tell me they have it if they don't! I'm patient and can work with a wide variety of kids - ADD/ADHD, special needs, regular education and G/T students.

I have extensive experience in administration of K-12 programs in mathematics and in at-risk student populations. During my high school and college career, I won awards in UIL Extemporaneous Speaking, Creative Writing, and Spelling competitions, and participated as a speaking delegate in numerous Model United Nations forums. I have taught study skills to a wide variety of middle and high school students during my teaching career in mathematics and science. I have also taught study skills specific to standardized tests (STAAR, TAKS, SAT/ACT) to students in need of more targeted help in studying. I help students both with general study skills and habits - time, organization, lists, so forth - as well as more specific study skills in math and science courses. I have taught TAKS-driven courses in public high schools for both math and science, and have helped create intensive short courses to help students reach mastery of the TAKS test.
