Hello and good day! I am currently working as the At-Risk coordinator for a local public school district, with 7 years prior as the Math coordinator, 3 years as Math/Science middle/high school facilitator, and 7 years of teaching math and science to middle and high school students in a public alternative school.
I have a lot of experience working with kids who are experiencing difficulty in passing state tests (TAKS Exit Level, STAAR EOC, even old TAAS!!!) and nationally-administered college tests (SAT, ACT, some ASVAB help) as well as local certification tests like the GRE. I can help you on both sides of the equation - I have extensive experience in math and science content teaching, have worked in consulting positions for math and science software providers, graded national tests in reading and science for companies such as Pearson and Harcourt, and have also worked with kids who have significant learning and behavior challenges to help them succeed in their studies.
I have also written math and science questions for companies such as Examgen and McGraw-Hill at the secondary level, so I am very familiar with how and why questions are asked on standardized tests. Finally, I have sat on a review panel for elementary grade math test creation for the Texas Education Agency, and am familiar with the process by which test questions are selected for Texas standardized tests.
I tutor in a "formally informal" manner. I can come to you or meet you in a neutral location (such as a Starbucks or public library), and request only a few formal rules: be on time, ask any question that comes to mind, and never leave with a question unresolved. I will spend as much time as needed on any topic until my student UNDERSTANDS the material - I don't let kids tell me they have it if they don't! I'm patient and can work with a wide variety of kids - ADD/ADHD, special needs, regular education and G/T students.
I am great with kids AND parents, and will get you the results you need. If you're going to invest in your student's education... invest in someone who cares about it as much as YOU do!
Thanks, and I hope to talk to you soon! Hello and good day! I am currently working as the At-Risk coordinator for a local public school district, with 7 years prior as the Math coordinator, 3 years as Math/Science middle/high school facilitator, and 7 years of teaching math and… Read more

We have had 4 tutoring sessions so far with Steve, and he is nothing short of amazing. He obviously loves to tutor, and it shows. Our 12 year-old son Cameron LOVES the time he gets to spend with Steve and looks forward to his bi-weekly lessons. Steve has the innate ability to describe/explain the subject material in a manner which is very easy to understand, and is very encouraging. In this short time Cameron's grades have already showed significant improvement, and his younger sister has already requested "Coach Steve" if she ever needs extra help academically!
Steven S. tutored my 6-yr old grandson once per week for approximately 6-months. His report card showed failing grades in math but after about 5 tutoring sessions he started to show improvement. Within the first few minutes of the first session my grandson and Steven were like best buddies and immediately related exceptionally well. Steven is a very easy going person who instinctively makes the student feel relaxed and makes him ready for an enriched learning experience. My grandson always looked forward to his tutoring visits and to the last few minutes of playtime with his beloved monster trucks to which Steven entertained without question. I definitely recommend Steven to anyone finding a need for math tutoring. Steven is a very, very honest and trustworthy person. His rates are very reasonable and always had the courtesy to text us his approximate time of arrival. My grandson is now receiving all A's and two B's in his report card. It is noteworthy to state that I had initially looked for a math tutor but in reality Steven helped my grandson with all his classes as his self esteem soared and is now happy and doing very well. Thanks, Steven. We cannot thank you enough.
Thank you so much for that very kind note! Aries is a GREAT kid, and his warm and giving heart is matched to a real perseverance that has helped him get to where he needs to be. He's worked hard, and I give that little guy a TON of credit for staying the course. Aries is always a joy to be around, and I thank you again for the encouraging words - I really appreciate it!
Steven is wonderful. He is an excellent math tutor. He explains math in a better way than most teachers do. We are very satisfied and will continue to use him for all our math needs.
Steve has become a trusted friend and tutor to my son, and a trusted friend for me. I know that he wants to help anyway that he is able to. I recommend Steve to all.
Steve is an amazing person to work with my child! My son has many mental and physical issues to overcome on a daily basis and Steve has incredible patience and skills working with him. My 6 year old had his tonsils and adenoids removed on 4/30 and has not been to school since. He was given almost 100 worksheets to do for the 2 weeks he is out of school and between myself and Steve we have knocked out more than 75% in 2 days. It took my son this long to even be back to himself enough to do anything, let alone school work.
I am EXTREMELY happy that I interviewed several tutors before choosing him. I was torn between him and one other and after our first conversation, I felt that he had more knowledge and patience that I knew my boy would need.
He makes the time with him fun so my son stays focused, even when his meds wear off after school hours. He is also very ENCOURAGING and shows my son extra praise with good work. He is always complimenting him and making him feel good about what they accomplished that day.
He also keeps me involved in the daily activities and successes. I am not just leaving them in a room together to work, I am there with them, learning the ways to teach my son also for when Steve is not here. I appreciate that he takes the time to keep me knowledgeable about the level of what a first grader would be at. I was teaching things to my child that were way too far advanced for him.
Steve is available to answer as many questions as I may have. He never rushes me or makes me feel like I am bothering him by asking additional questions on 1st grade work.
I would like to say thank you again (even though I thank Steve every time I speak to him), but I am very impressed with him, his skills, and his knowledge of my child's needs and I feel GREAT knowing that he is there to back me up with any extra help my lil one needs!
Steve is the best! He communicates clearly, is patient with our son, and teaches the biology concepts in a way that our son gets. Our son thinks Steve is great and his grades are continuing to improve. We are very thankful!
Update: Thank you so much, Steve!! We will certainly get in touch in the fall as our son gets in to Chemistry. Have a blessed summer!
Update: Steve continues to be an awesome fit with my son! He always feel better equipped for his science and math classes after review with Steve. Also, we so appreciate Steve's ongoing commitment to our son, even when both of our schedules are tight.
Steve is so helpful. I couldn't have asked for a better tutor. He is patient, kind, and always willing to help.

My daughter really liked him. She said he was funny and did not treat her like she is stupid. Grasped concept by end if lesson.
Steven S. is awesome. He explains so that my daughter can understand. Would recommend him to anyone.
Steve has been a great tutor for my son. He has helped him prepare for the SAT and is now helping him prepare for the ACT. My son has nothing but high regard for Steve and has really enjoyed working with him. He is easy to contact and promptly returns any emails or texts. Can't say enough positive things about our experience with him.
Steven is great with my 8 year old son. He is very patient and makes math fun for him. Steven has a great sense of humor and my son looks forward to his sessions. I would recommend Steven to my family and friends!
Steve is an AWESOME person and tutor. He has made learning algebra very simple and fun. I'm extremely satisfied with his tutoring service. Thanks Steve!!
My tutoring session with Steve was fantastic. He answered all of my questions and I would always ask for him in the future! He gets a five star plus rating!
Steven is great! Our daughter is a freshman in High School this year and is having the typical struggles with introduction to Algebra. She was growing very frustrated and so we thought a tutor may be a good solution.... and it was/is. She really likes working with Steven and actually says she enjoys learning from him (don't think I've ever heard such a thing from her....haha). Her grades are already improving after just a couple of weeks with Steven. We are so glad we are able to have him for a tutor to our daughter.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have spent 17 years in the mathematics educational field, including 7 years as a teacher, 3 years as a teacher leader for my district in mathematics, and 7 years as the head coordinator of mathematics in my district.
I have written test questions for companies such as Examgen and Pearson, and have reviewed mathematics materials and tests for Pearson, Houghton-Mifflin and the State of Texas.
I have trained and worked with schools in the use of Algebra I software materials in classrooms nationally for the AgileMind/ThinkFive corporation.
I have played competitive basketball throughout middle school, high school and college. I currently coach my son and daughter's club teams for a local MS/HS-aged organization. fundamental skills, such as ball handling, shooting technique and footwork are always part of my tutoring/training regimen for any player. Advanced skills, such as low post moves, moving without the ball, pick and roll, and position-specific attributes are also part of what I teach my students.
I have successfully navigated several positions of increasing importance in both private and public industry. I have counseled students as part of my Yale alumni club committee here in San Antonio regarding course schedules, areas of study, and job threads based on the student's interests. I have also helped peers become successful private consultants based on my expertise and work in the private educational industry (Pearson, McGraw Hill, AgileMind, etc.).
I have extensive experience in administration of K-12 programs in mathematics and in at-risk student populations. I am the current K-12 At-Risk district coordinator in my district, and served as the K-12 Mathematics district coordinator for 7 years previously. I have a great deal of experience working with K-6 students in mathematics and in general intervention programs for reading, writing, and science as part of my at-risk work. Finally, I have directly taught 6th grade math and science in my previous stint as a middle/high school teacher.
I have over 25 years of public speaking experience, and have been recognized for my accomplishments over much of that time. During my high school and college career, I won awards in UIL Extemporaneous Speaking, Creative Writing, and Spelling competitions, and participated as a speaking delegate in numerous Model United Nations forums. Additionally, I have spoken on a wide range of professional development topics in mathematics and science at state and national conventions (NSTA, CAMT, TSTA, more) for the past 10 years. My audiences have ranged in size from a handful of attendees to over 300 conference goers.
I have taught study skills to a wide variety of middle and high school students during my teaching career in mathematics and science. I have also taught study skills specific to standardized tests (STAAR, TAKS, SAT/ACT) to students in need of more targeted help in studying. I help students both with general study skills and habits - time, organization, lists, so forth - as well as more specific study skills in math and science courses. I have had great success with students in middle and high school grades becoming much more efficient in getting work done and organizing themselves in a practical, durable manner.
I have tutored students in TAKS math and science at all levels of MS and HS, from 6th grade mathematics and 8th grade science to Exit Level for both subjects. I have taught TAKS-driven courses in public high schools for both math and science, and have helped create intensive short courses to help students reach mastery of the TAKS test. As the TAKS phases out for the new STAAR testing, the high school seniors who still fall under the old TAKS guidelines require the attention to formula charts, understood knowledge, and testing procedures that my TAKS tutoring background provides.
I have extensive knowledge in the zoological sciences - my B.A. from Yale includes a double major in Organismal Biology, which covers most of the zoological approaches to science. I have taught Environmental Science at the high school level as well, which integrates a significant amount of zoological content in the Texas standards. Finally, I have direct experience in the taxonomic and organizational side of zoology from my student work as a assistant student curator at the Peabody Museum of Natural Sciences at Yale University during my senior year in college.
