Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I will help you prepare for the ACT test by going over format of the test and reading strategies. The faster you start to prepare for the test the better off you will be to achieve your desired score. My strong background in reading will be a key factor in helping you to obtain your goals. I have a master's degree and am a certified Texas teacher with 15 years teaching experience. I have a proven track record that gets the needed results!

ADD/ADHD

I have a master's degree in Counseling along with 15 years teaching experience. Students with ADD/ADHD require an individual educational plan that will meet their needs in class and at home and I can do that with you and your child to address strengths and weaknesses.

Aspergers

My Master's Degree in Counseling plus my teaching certification makes me the perfect combination for teaching a child with Aspergers. I have classroom experience teaching Aspergers students. With Aspergers instruction is presented differently I share the agenda. Students with Asperger Syndrome have difficulty distinguishing between information that is essential and information that is not. In addition, they often do not remember information that others acquire from past experiences or that come as “common sense.” Thus, it is important to state the obvious and “live out loud.” This will help the student understand the meaning behind actions.

I use Simplify Language. I Keep language simple and concise, and speak at a slow, deliberate pace. Students with Asperger Syndrome to have difficulty “reading between the lines,” understanding abstract concepts like sarcasm, or interpreting facial expressions. Be clear and specific when providing instructions. Because students with Asperger Syndrome cannot predict upcoming events, they are often unsure what to do. I provide feedback and reassurance frequently so that the student knows he or she is moving in the right direction or completing the correct task. I use frequent check-ins to monitor student progress and stress.

ASVAB

Let me help you prepare for the exam. I will provide test taking tips in math and English for the test. Timing yourself on the practice tests is also a great way to make sure you are ahead of the game and never worry about time in the actual test. Being prepared for this test takes time so the faster you get started the better your result will be.

Discrete Math

I use Discrete mathematics to make math concepts come alive for students. It's an excellent tool for improving reasoning and problem-solving skills, and is appropriate for students at all levels and of all abilities. It offers a way of motivating unmotivated students by truly engaging the student. I do this by using games and hands on activities and making math real for them in their world. If a student doesn't understand how math fits in their world they find it meaningless. With Discrete Math finally see how math fits and relates to other content areas and they have fun learning about it. I have a Master's Degree in Counseling plus my teaching certification.

Dyslexia

I'm certified by the state of Texas to teach students with dyslexia and other learning problems. I will be using a multi-sensory approach that involves many senses at the same time: touch, sight, movement, and sound. I will also work on building your child's confidence. A structured reading scheme that involves repetition and introduces new words slowly is extremely important. This allows the child to develop confidence and self esteem when reading. I have 14 years experience teaching students with dyslexia in the regular classroom.

Elementary (K-6th)

I will provide core instruction in reading, writing, phonics, math, science, and social studies targeting Texas State objectives in grades k-6. I will build on your child's strengths and weaknesses giving her or him confidence and helping to prepare for the current year of instruction and to get ready for next year. I'm certified to teach math, science, social studies, language arts (reading, writing, phonics) in the state of Texas grades 1-8th self-contained, which can be looked up on the TEA web site. I'm certified teacher that works with NEISD during the day.

In math I will use hands on learning using Math Investigations and Marilyn Burns. Your child will develop a deep understanding of mathematics content.

In Science I will teach your child to develop the abilities, knowledge, and understanding of
scientific concepts and processes and habits of mind that are required for personal decision-making, participation in civic and cultural affairs, and economic productivity.

In Social Studies I will teach your child to develop character and habits of mind that promote civic responsibility in a democratic society and interdependent world. Your child will see history as a part of day-to-day life and will recognize and understand her or his place in the world and in history. Your child will also take an active interest in current events, viewing issues from multiple perspectives, and will develop cultural acceptance by listening, considering and evaluating other philosophies and cultures.

Elementary Math

I use multi-sensory approach when teaching mathematics through the use of games and hands-on materials. I use "Math Talks" to check for understanding with the use of higher order thinking questioning. Mini assessments are also used as we move through different objectives.

When teaching very young children I build largely upon their play and the natural relationships between learning and life in their daily activities, interests, and questions.

Together we will explore patterns and shapes, compare sizes, and count things.
I enhance children's mathematics learning when they ask questions that provoke clarifications, extensions, and development of new understandings.

English

I'm certified to teach Language Arts in the state of Texas grades 1-8th. I can tutor any subject outside a classroom that I have taken additional prep classes in.

I will teach students to:
•Read the text and decide what is essential to know once they have finished their reading.

•Help them decide which portions of the reading can be eliminated. This kind of purpose-setting will help students read with a clear focus and prevent them from getting lost in extraneous details.

I will also teach Expository Writing and Persuasive WRITING.

Handwriting

By playing, singing, and building letters, students develop the important skills they need to print words, sentences, and paragraphs. I teach grip, letter and number recognition, and capital and number formation. I have a Master's Degree in Counseling plus my teaching certification.

Phonics

I will teach your child how to blend letter sounds and word parts to develop a foundation for reading. The goal of phonics instruction is to teach students the most common sound-spelling relationships so that they can decode, or sound out, words. This decoding ability is a crucial element in reading success. I will use 4 Blocks program. I'm certified in Texas to teach grades 1-8 with a area of concentration in Reading. I also have 14 years teaching experience in public schools in San Antonio. Currently I teach for NEISD and have been there for 14 years.

Public Speaking

I'm a certified teacher with the state of Texas and am employed full-time during the day at NEISD. I have a master's degree and 14 years teaching experience.

Students learn how when they say something and how they physically present themselves are just as important as what they say. By understanding the dynamics involved in effective persuasive speaking, students will improve their overall confidence in communicating.

Students will learn how to demonstrate the appropriate public speaking and listening skills (e.g., body language, articulation, listening to be able to identify specific examples of the speaker's coordination of talking and action) that would be necessary to influence or change someone's mind or way of thinking about a topic.

Students will learn how writing speeches consists of a lot more than finding a few inspirational quotes and possibly a funny story or two. The key to writing good speeches lies in using a theme.

Reading

Beginning readers will focus on phonics, spelling, reading comprehension, and vocabulary.

I will use Seven Strategies to Teach your child text Comprehension: 1. Monitoring comprehension, 2. Metacognition, 3. Graphic and semantic organizers, 4. Answering questions, 5. Generating questions,
6. Recognizing story structure, and 7. Summarizing.

Social Studies

I will teach social studies skills based on Texas Administrative Code (TAC), Title 19, Part II Chapter 113, Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Social Studies. The unit of study will be based on the grade level of the student. Each grade level has different TEKS. I will teach your child to develop character and habits of mind that promote civic responsibility in a democratic society and interdependent world.

I'm certified to teach social studies in grades 1-8th self-contained. I have 14 years teaching experience.

Special Needs

With 15 years of teaching experience and a Master's degree from St. Mary's University in Counseling your student will be in good hands with me. Everyday I work with students with special needs from gifted to special education. I will develop an individual educational plan with your student to meet their educational and emotional needs inside and outside the classroom.

Spelling

I will provide spelling lists that meet the weekly/monthly needs of your child. Your child needs to be able to spell the words they need to write. Therefore their spelling lists need to be connected to other things that are currently being taught. They will learn several strategies that will help them spell.

STAAR

I'm a highly qualified Teacher, according to the state of Texas, by providing direct instruction to students in core academic subject area, including English, reading or language arts, mathematics, science, arts, history, and geography.

In order for a student to be successful on STAAR, they need to master objectives TEKS in that content the area that they will be tested in. I'm fully aware of TEKS and objectives, and help students review and address any weak areas so they can master and pass STAAR test that they will encounter in the current school year, and look ahead to future STAAR test.

With my Master's degree, years of experience teaching, and my teaching techniques, you can rest assured that we will get the job done.

Study Skills

I have a Master's Degree and have been teaching for 15 years. Currently I'm with NEISD teaching full-time during the day. I'm certified to teach all subject areas in the state of Texas grades 1-8th self-contained. Study skills is an area that I teach each year to help my students to be successful in all subject areas. I will teach your child how to study focusing on individual study skills. Your child will learn how to set goals, prioritize, and stay organized.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary knowledge is critical to reading comprehension; it is important help foster a student's development of a large “word bank” and effective vocabulary learning strategies. There are several effective explicit (intentional, planned instruction) and implicit (spontaneous instruction as a child comes to new words in a text) strategies that I will employ with your child.

Writing

Writing without tears! I will focus on the shared events of students' lives to inspire writing. I will help your child work with words relevant to their lives to help them build vocabulary. I will ask students to reflect on and write about their writing.
