I have been a tutor since the fall of 2002. As an undergraduate at St. Mary's University, I was a supplemental instructor for the Calculus II courses and Finite Mathematics courses. In addition, I also tutored individual students ranging from developmental mathematics to differential equations.
Once I graduated from St. Mary's University, I worked at the community college level tutoring students ranging from developmental mathematics to Calculus III while going for my master's degree in mathematics education at the University of Texas at San Antonio. I have worked with groups as big as 5-6 students, but my main focus has been with one-on-one sessions with students.
As a tutor, my method of tutoring depends on the style the individual I am working with prefers. I feel that as a tutor it is my job to try to make the individual as comfortable as possible, but at the same time present the material in a way that is beneficial to the individual. At my current job, it is my job to train and supervise a large group of tutors (25-30 tutors). During that training, I try to have my tutors focus on being able to adapt to every type of student because each student does not learn the same way. Since I believe that this is the most effective approach to take in each tutoring session, I am always changing and learning from each individual student about how to approach the problems so that he/she is successful in a course or passing a particular exam.
During my years of tutoring, I have tutored most mathematics courses in the high school and college levels. In addition, I have tutored students getting ready to take the GED, SAT, ACT, ASVAB, and any other state tests that has a mathematics portion in it.
It is my hope that you choose me as your tutor. I will make sure that your time with me will be enjoyable and rewarding. My son had a tutoring session with Gil and will continue to work with him. Being an educator myself, my son, who's in college reported that his session went very well. I explained what area my son needed help with and Gil had no hesitation, whereas another tutor I sent the information to seemed reluctant on the material. Get Gil to help!
Gil is a great tutor. He is very easy to set an appointment with. I have college courses that I get help with. The time that he spends on a subject is very straight forward. He gets you to understand in a very clear way. Good communication skills and cares about your understanding of the lesson.
He always makes time for us and he is punctual, plus he is great with my daughter. Very patient and knowledgeable.
Gil is a very patient, personable gentleman. We will definitely be using his services a couple times per week until my son gets on track!!
Gil is always on time and more than willing to help our son in any aspect of his math work. He is helping him get better prepared for an upcoming test. We see a difference only after 4 sessions.
And a great teacher to boot! He got me through calculus II and I am where I am today in school with Gilivaldo's help.
Gil did an excellent job preparing my daughter for Algebra. He was very patient and made everything very clear. Her grades improved greatly.
He is very talented in tutoring and rendering student the opportunity to learn the inquiring subject. Thank you for sharing your gift of knowledge to others.
No matter how many times I asked the same question, he patiently explained the process until I could demonstrate my understanding. Wish he was our Statistics Professor.
Gili is an excellent tutor. He explains things calmly and has a lot of patience. We will continue to use him to help our student review for the SAT and ACT. I would recommend him highly.
Gilivaldo is currently assisting my 10th grader with Algebra 2 and we've already seen the positive results of his tutoring with improved scores on his tests! Gilivaldo has been very flexible and been able to schedule a tutoring session on short notice. Most of all, he is very patient and makes sure that my son understands the concepts he's teaching before moving on to a new lesson. I would definitely recommend Gilivaldo.
He's a good tutor so far. Doesn't rush me and he's easy to reach. The past couple lessons have been beneficial, and I will continue having lessons with him.
After Gili left today, my daughter commented, "You know, the way he explains geometry really makes sense. It's even easier than using a calculator."
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
