Autism

I was trained to work with autistic students at the Kingsbury Center in Washington, D.C. and have worked with several autistic children. I am familiar with the many dispensations to allow students to function more comfortably in a classroom environment such as special time allowance for work completion; allowing the student to create his or her own work station/schedule, etc. I am a very patient and dedicated instructor and would be happy to work with autistic students.

Elementary (K-6th)

My students liked to use the "Explode the Code" workbooks and other primary workbooks to improve their reading, writing and spelling. Learning to read and write can be fun and exciting! You get to keep your workbooks and notebooks to show how much progress you are making and to help you throughout the school year. There are lots of fun math games that we play also. I have a library of fun books to read that I am eager to share with you, such as "Clarence the Lion" and "The 40,000 Balloons." I hope to hear from you soon!

ESL/ESOL

I am fluent in Spanish and French and am actively tutoring in both languages at this time. I have taught Spanish and am also certified in English, reading and reading comprehension. I tutor in these subjects at both the elementary and high school level as well.

Phonics

I am a certified tutor from the Kingsbury Center in Washington, DC. The certification uses a method that teaches reading, writing, grammar and speech through phonics and phonetics. I have worked with students from grades 2 though 12 to help them improve their reading comprehension and writing skills. This method works very well and is lots of fun also! I would like the opportunity to work with you and show you an easier and better way to learn to read and write!

Special Needs

I received my certification to work with students with learning disabilities at The Kingsbury Center in Washington D.C. In addition to working with the student's teachers and parents to develop an Individualized Education Program (IEP), I have used tools to facilitate the learning process such as working with the teacher to come up with accommodations like recording a lesson for students with attention/auditory problems, breaking tasks into smaller steps and giving the student more time to finish school work or take tests. I have a large amount of writing, reading and math games to help children focus and learn while having fun at the same time!

Study Skills

It is important to develop proper study skills early and that is something I enjoy very much. My students use a large calendar and notebook to keep track of their homework, tests and other special projects. Also, we create a unique school work space at home that is comfortable for the student and that helps him or her stay organized and prepared for assignments throughout the school year. I hope I can help you during this school year!

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
