I have been teaching for 24 years with most of that time being in Special Education. My background was originally in Speech and Hearing Therapy, so I was a Speech Therapist and after a couple years I added an ESL Endorsement because of my background in language acquisition.
After moving to another district, I taught middle school resource Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies for 8 years and Content Mastery for 2 years. I had a new student move in who was visually impaired and a braille reader. Her vision teacher suggested that I go back to school and get my certification for teaching the visually impaired.
My current job found me while I was taking my first classes for my Vision certification and I have been a Certified Teacher of the Visually Impaired for 7 years. I adapt materials in all subject areas for visually impaired students so they may participate in class with their sighted peers.
I love learning even though my own learning in the lower grades was a struggle. Because of this, I understand first hand how children learn in different ways. I hope that I am able to share some strategies that I have learned along the way.
